I've been interested in getting in to a Paradox gsg for a while now but I couldn't really be bothered learning it all and I never really had the time to invest in them. However I'm going to have some spare time soon and so I've decided to bite the bullet and finally learn to play one of them. I'm leaning towards Victoria 2 because it has the most interesting setting.

What am I getting myself in to?

For most games, I'd tell you that setting is really what matters the most, and learning the mechanics is an involved but tolerable process for pretty much any game. The exceptions are HoI4 (because it looks shit), EU4 (because they seem to think adding new buttons you have to press is all DLC is about these days), and HoI3 to an extent (because of the tedium).

If you find the Victorian period the most interesting, then roll with it. As for what you're getting yourself into, that really depends on what you mean by the question.
