The concept of a character creator isn't inherently flawed, and a lot of people feel it was the next step for sonic games in general, considering the fanbase. The avatar's gameplay is crap, but so are classics and moderns in this game, so yeah.

I don't know what happened. They were doing a decent job building it up & shit like Metropolis looked fucking awesome, but the endgame just....happened.

The problem is how the Avatar was implemented. Everyone is sucking the Avatar's dick and the Avatar becomes BFF with Sonic. It's basically every bad Sonic fanfic ever.

We've known that Classic sonic was playable since the very first trailer. No one thought Forces would be spectacular, it was met with mixed reactions since day 1. And Shadow being playable increased most fan's perception of the game, it didn't lower it.
