200% new to mods, should I try Thorium or Calamity first?

Thorium. Calamity doesn't play nice with other mods.
Add Fargos, Magic Storage, WeaponOut and Expeditions + Content for decent ancillary mods.

Thorium is straight up the best mod for Terraria. It massively expands on the game while keeping in theme and making sure that it all fits together. On top of that, every time they add new content, they really flesh it out, instead of just half-assedly adding new items.

A bunch of the settings (gore, camera) are enabled, but have local options as well.

Updated to 2.0_17 (enabled swinging mechanics!).
