It depends. The Key specifically only gives access to a personal vault, not Gilgamesh's personal vault. It's a toss-up whether or not stealing it would give him all Gil's shit or whether it would just give him a fresh Gate.

Think of it this way. You have legs that let you jump high. If someone came and cut those off, then started using those legs themselves, you're left without your former ability. On the other hand, I have a safe, and a key. If someone came and stole the key, I still have the fucking safe. You got the key, but without the safe, that key is fucking useless. Make it your own, write your own name on it. It means nothing unless you also take the safe.

Even if he lost the key, the Gate is a separate thing. He still has it. And he still has access to most of the shit in it. At best, he's only losing access to Ea. And only access to it, not the place where Ea is kept itself.

You seem to be under the impression that the key is what allows him to open the Gate of Babylon. It's not. It's kind of, sort of useless. He flat out says that.
