That's fair, I'd have liked to see that too. I suppose the cellphone scene was supposed to accomplish that alone but some supporting third person narrative would have helped all the same.

I think it's supposed to be implied that they were both hanging on to the whole nebulous "we didn't flat out say it's over" and hoping things would calm down over time. I think there's a line or two about how midori herself was trying as hard as she could to make a case to her dad during the time she was ghosting Yuuma, but her dad kept emotionally blackmailing her with the importance of her studies and promise with her mom that she felt she was left with no choice.
