I say this as I've read LOTR 6 times, the Hobbit 4 times, and the Silmarillion twice because I enjoy them, Tolkien's prose can get very boring if you don't fully invest yourself. I love the books but some days I just can't stand the thought of going through it

They're my favourite books, but don't get me wrong, Tolkiens work is an absolute slog to get through.

I enjoy them, I think they're good, but that's a subjective opinion.
They're definitely deep fantasy, they're heavy on prose, and good god there's so many plot points and characters you have to have a glossary to keep up with them.
I'd give them a go, start with the Hobbit. It's the "lightest" of the novels Tolkien wrote (plus it's the prequel to LOTR), and then move onto LOTR. Save the Silmarillion for last if you ever get to it, it's a clusterfuck.
