The only fact here is it's very likely LoRez was bleeding money with the old system. Cosmetics weren't enough to keep it afloat and those dumb enchanted keys sold like shit because everyone realized they're not worth it. Also, playerbase keeps dropping, but I'll let you be the judge of why that is.
There's no mystery here anymore, they're intent on doing this maximum overjew system only to see how it affects user accessibility and retention, and fucking over the entirety of the veteran players in the process. The latter is where they majorly, MAJORLY fucked up because it went beyond just pissing us off, and it evolved into a full blown witchhunt by every forum, and admittedly it was all their fault.
The matter at hand here is us veterans (ie. people that have more than two braincells to understand the old mechanics) are a minority, and they don't really care to please us when the big bucks and big populations is the average dumbfuck player.
Call it a calculated backlash if you want, they absolutely knew every person more than moderately invested already in the game would be pissed, but they did it in favor of winning over more new oblivious people and old ones that don't care at all.

And hey, imagine the system doesn't work out and they keep bleeding money and players. What do you think they might do then? Kill the game for good? Revert this trash and start again from zero? Who knows, but I bet it'd be fun to watch a second trainwreck because you just know people will have invested in their precious level 10 cards and they'll get taken away.

You CAN'T buy essence. You have to buy radiants for a chance to get essence (which has garbage trade off by the way, 1000 to craft, 350 to disenchant). If you're telling me that you can't use the cards you want because you aren't opening enough chests isn't pay to win, then CU isn't pay to win.

The obvious real reasons are either:
A) they didn't have all the lore ready, even with all the delays, so they blame it on bugs or

B) they actually forgot to add them before packing the update/overwrote a build with the lore ready with one that has the placeholder text by accident and they said "fuck it" and went with it, blaming it on bug
