As someone who just beat smt 4 recently i can agree to most of that, i found out on my playthrough that you can also become too neutral and screw yourself in the final choice too. I somehow got so neutral that i could actually have my pick of chaos or law because either answer would push me into the alignment.

I also agree that 4a feels rather out of place compared to 4, all the characters dynamics are different to your old group and the feeling in general is just off when compared to 4. Still had fun but it definitely felt quite different. It's upgrades from some of 4's flaws and more difficult challenges helped keep me engaged however.
I found the removal of 4's mechanics turning into apps as annoying as well but i didn't mind it making the game a bit harder so that's that for me.
