bump

Bump.

Can anybody post some example(s) of good looking "simple" sprite work?

How simple is "simple"?

Like 8-bit console era stuff, or earlier? 16-bit era stuff?

Both. Whatever you personally consider "simple" and "good".

What the fuck is this ugly shit?
I love it.

...

First person, VX Ace style.

...

...

...

I'm not done, but this is something.
I hope this is "good looking" at least.

...

Tell me about your game!

Is this a taxidermy dog?

Hero must travel to different worlds to strengthen his McGuffin so he can chase after the big bad who wants to conquer lots of worlds using the evil version of McGuffin.

The two characters I'm working on sprites for are residents of zombie survival themed world. They'll accompany the hero as he solves some problems of zombie world and lead him to the McGuffin he needs. One is a medic while the other is an all arounder.

I'd basically draw the line for "simple" at the NES. Final Fantasy III is quite nice looking, as RPG sprites go. IIRC they had four colours to work with for a character sprite (including transparency!) and these are some nice, clean looking characters.

Reminder that "sprites" are any 2D game graphics, raster or vector, including painted tilesets, UI elements, and even fonts and pop damage displays.

I think the chick might still be too small for a face asset.

Phantasy Star looks even more amazing for the time it was made (and especially for having animated enemies), but at this point it has enough colours that it doesn't feel simple any more.

Move her closer to the camera, you doofus.

I's not that simple, at least whenever I resize something in aseprite I basically have to redraw it because the pixels get all fucked up.

Well, yes. Resizing does that. But it's better to re-draw the image than keep it looking weirdly zoomed out compared to the rest.

Yeah I know, you're right, either do it right or don't do it. I'll redraw it until it doesn't look like shit.

Why does she have boobs?

Because I want to get good at drawing boobs.

girls only have Boobs when they are naked.

schrodinger's boobs

I've never drawn a female before so I tried drawing her naked first because I wanted to practice drawing lewd females. However the setting for the game isn't set in a world that follows any concise rules of reality so she could literally just be a naked girl and it wouldn't be that weird. I haven't really done any sort of hard worldbuilding or story writing though so I can't exactly answer any questions regarding why I'm doing stuff or why it makes sense.

I'm just going to freestyle it based purely on mood and style right now. I'm trying to ignore conventions I know in JRPG's right now and let other influences guide me.

what am I looking at?

graphic_design_is_my_passion.png

Initial attempt at both a game name and a logo. Torn between Null or Copy.
Since it's inspired by Japanese puzzle/horror games, I wanted a sort of engrish-y, vaguely tech-y style name that made use of symbols.

I found the "null" really hard to read, at least on this background.

Also, mixels. I'd smooth the // to the same pixel size as the rest.

Trying to get back into making stuffs, have this something long abandoned in VXACE.

It's SRWesque (quick dialogue between dozens of main characters in a scene, stage progression, one battle per chapter, branching plot, etc), but replace the turn based strategy with RPG combat.

The only time you would see character sprites and maptiles would be when you are "deployed" for combat certainly not because I can't map to save my life, and even then you don't have control of your characters.
It's more like a long event sequence where the sprites clash and do whatever the plot demands them to do before you enter battle and have your way with the default combat system.

tl;dr
SRW with fantasy premise and default combat system.

Should I switch to RenPy instead and change combat to narration, seeing that I focus more on dialogue, or continue working on RPG maker so people can see the action scenes being shown in sprites?

The formula works for srw because a srpg "battle" is essentially the equivalent of a whole dungeon in a regular rpg. Using a regular rpg system, it seems as though you'd either not see very much action, or the battles would drag on a lot.

If your main focus is story, the features of a visual novel engine would probably serve you better than rm.

What is written before the //?

>Adding Engrish for authenticity.
Das Racist.

Null.

Oh, oops.
I'll fiddle with the background to make it a bit more obvious and tweak the slashes, thanks.

I like you user.

Posting progress.

Currently making sprites and tilesets.
Going with eight classes. Warrior, Thief, Witch, Priestess, Dancer, Hunter, Fencer, and Monk.

What kind of monk are we talking about?

The "unnarmed martial artist" kind.

That's my favorite.

Behold!
I have combined several Dracula themes into my own!!

N-now seriously, how does this sound?

Fucking autocorrect

nice undertale clone

Beautiful.
What is that? Tell us something.

the main weakness i see is that it's too messy/hectic.
perhaps there are some things that can be changed arrangement-wise, but i think the biggest issue comes form the mixing.
the organ can be earsplitting in tone, and bleeds everywhere because of its long "release"
and percussion (the crashes in particular) tends to drown out the soundspace

otherwise, it definitely sounds like a gothic castle kind of theme.

Perfect! I am trying to get better with mixing so that's exactly my weak spot. Thanks, user, I'll work on it.

What is EoD?

GRAPHIC_DESIGN_IS_MY_PASSION.png

I decided to embrace the mixels, so as to emphasize the "disconnect" feel.

much easier to read i'd say

agreed, much easier to read
i also like the pseudo mspaint look (is that fixedsys?), but get rid of the antialiasing on the squares

That looks much better

Close, FixedSys Excelsior.

hi, 20/f :) bored and alone, looking for fun ;)

Does one need to get some enjoyment? then why don't you examine amazing browsing girls by chatting to them.

If you're going to mixel anyway, maybe make the brackets the same pixel size as the slashes?

For anybody who is on the lookout to get a date accompanied by a hot female you then will need to check out.

...

i forgot how to beat my own game

Use cheat engine

This is probably a noob question but what's the source on these portraits?

It's a Fate doujin game, been in production for some time.
Of course you need to like the series to care, but at least some may find it interesting technically.

spicy bumps

extra spicy

what

me (partially) integrating steamworks into the game, i think

bump

I like it. As someone else mentioned, maybe get rid of the antialiasing on the squares, but as for everything else, I think it's really cool.

Those are by Naramura. They were battlers made for XP, but I'm pretty sure that the original site has been lost to time.
Still, if you're looking for more of his stuff, check here:
forum.chaos-project.com/index.php?topic=1835.0

And maybe google something like "naramura rpg maker".

Your new year's resolution is to work on your game every day, right?
It sure is mine.

Either make her boobs less saggy or don't let her have boobs at all. Unless she's supposed to be old then that's okay. We need more naked grandma alien representation in video games.

My New Year's resolution is to break up with my whore of a girlfriend.

Her tits look like they're being pulled in by a magnet while she's looking shocked that her boobs are magnetic. I commented on why she has boobs because it looks like she's supposed to be wearing armor, otherwise why else would her ribcage be showing? Though now I just figured it's the artist's style though I do think they're overusing shading every nook and cranny rather than just shading the edges for softer lines which you normally see in pixel art. It kind of reminds me of the polarization filter on smartphone apps.
She also strongly resembles Moyai (pic related) but I doubt anyone cares about that.

I don't know anything about your situation but maybe it would be best to just do it.
Break up, gather your belongings (give her belongings back) and say good bye without looking back.
If you live together then move out.
Then you can finally work on your game again.

>Fate
Hell yes, but does it have porn?

That has been my resolution since 5 years ago.
In the end, I did absolutely nothing.

>It's in Japanese

What's the point?

Just learn moonrunes bruh

Is the rpgmaker community dead? It feels like no one is playing or discussing mv games as much as there was during the previous makers.

I'm always on the look for and playing games, I just was under the impression that this general was more about making them.

hi

Well I'm not talking about just this general but on rpgmakerweb and rpgmaker.net too. I see pages of games that have no comments even after months of putting it up there.

Yep, the demo has porn dumped at the end as a preview. imgur.com/a/MH21z

There is hope. twitter.com/LuwenWorkshop/status/946915831648108545

The red haired chick is pretty hot.

Her name's Scathach, you secondary.

I never played a Fate game and I'm not the one who asked if it has porn.

I might rip the demo images later, but as of now these will be the characters that can be fucked.

>Astolfo

Yeah, it's relatively dead compared to the golden age(?).
>the current userbase grows up and out of RM dev
>there aren't as many 2D JRPGs coming out
>potential new blood isn't as exposed to 2D JRPGs, so they're less likely to want to jump into making a JRPG
>the RM stigma will keep growing until we find our "undertale" release
>potential new blood won't want to get into an engine that has such a stigma
>people interested in dev jump straight into unity/game maker

As for rpgmg specifically, earlier in December, I was seeing a lot of activty by people that I remembered, and it was a lot more lively compared to this summer. Nowadays, it's died back down again, for what I'm assuming is for holiday nonsense reasons. I'm not much of a jolly, jovial dude, so I've been working throughout the month. :)

The artist likes boys.
And the MC is male only. So you are gay if you go for it.

It's only gay if the balls are touching.

>Dawn of the symphony of the portrait in the dissonant aria's moonlight sonata of the moon & Knuckles HD
desu I like the title more than the music, but it's pretty good too.

Turns out all of those mapping tutorials on youtube are either about parallax mapping and photoshop trickery, or "this is how you draw a 10x10 square room"
So for now I'll watch speedmapping videos instead to maybe learn some tricks and just keep going at it until I get a better sense of what works. I think this second map ended up being less confused and messy compared to the first, I'm actually planning to keep this one

On the other hand, I almost finished the database for my first game.
And today I'll probably try setting up some plugins.
