Islam is an actual religion which in the medieval period was at the center of the civilized world, dominated the great trade routes of Eurasia and Africa and went hand-in-hand with a well-organized bureaucratic state. Any steppe barbarian who wanted to be anything more than a steppe barbarian would have to convert to something, and Islam was by far the best choice.

Tengrism is barely even a religion, it's just a label modern people put on a bunch of related beliefs revolving around a similar sky god which modern pan-Turkist retards have latched on to as a way to seem less like Arabs.

Pretty much this, OP. Tengrism just doesn't have surviving texts laying out a theological framework or any apologetic texts to respond to criticisms from other religions. If it had those things at the time, it likely wouldn't have been overcome by Islam in the first place.
