X has the best music, the best characters (inb4 xd Tidus hahahahahaha and whining) at least Tidus has a character unlike other FF protags. Auron is real badass, Wakka is the best brudda Yuna is a cutie and I want Lulu to step on my dick. Kimahri is for furries, Rikku is for pedos.
FFX also has the best endgame content of all FF games, (though Yiazmat is really fun in FFXII)

I thought they were just arbitrarily assigned and encouraged building teams based around specific girls, like the year and subunit bonuses

That's fair, FFX is quite linear in story, but I wouldn't say the gameplay is bland since you literally make any character go any path you like, you could make Yuna your highest physical damage character if you'd like.

Like in terms of series? Way too much that ranges from FF,DQ,SMT, LOH, PM, Xeno, RoF etc since I was a big fucking weeb.
