I've played it in VR with other players who weren't in VR. Unless there have been major updates in the last couple months, VR isn't worth it in that game. I had to switch to desktop mode because half the menus just don't work in the headset, motion controls aren't usable, and keyboard and mouse movement while seated is disorienting when exploring a crashed spaceship at odd angles.
