No, the real reason is simply that fighting game players tend to cross-polinate, while Smash players don't. Most Smash players only play Smash and only watch Smash, while most fighting game players will play and watch multiple games from various series.
Catherine and Windjammers exemplify this perfectly; Most Catherine and Windjammer players play fighting games too.
