Nah, all of the Lair branches surprisingly have around the same death rate. Snake is actually the easiest, if only because -- as long as you don't get repeatedly fucked by guardian serpents -- you can almost always just run away, since most nagas are slow.

Shoals and Swamp are actually the dangerous ones, albeit for different reasons: Shoals has straight-up hard-hitting monsters with a terrain advantage, while Swamp is oriented around 1-2 worst case scenarios happening (getting into a bad position, then escaping to a worse position).

Combat is pretty faced pace actually (similar pace to a MD game and when I say MD I mean PMD). I didn't find myself kiting monsters or anything like in Crawl. Managing stamina is pretty annoying though. I just hope it gets more difficult. The boss fight is the only time I had any real chance of dying.

Me slime died. What mutation should I try next? I've succesfully made it post-threshhold on Bear and Slime so far. Bear is okay, but I hadn't prepped gear for it so I ended up naked, got infected and died. Slime is bad. Tons of maintenance with no meaningful upside since it boosts a meh stat in exchange for one of the best ones, cooking food/water isn't hard to do and the slime summons are weak as shit with bad AI

Are you looking for weird ones or good ones? Cephalopod, chimera and maybe bird for the first type. Spider and plant are one of the better ones that aren't just human+.

Already built out my own dungeon generation, lighting algos, fov algos, etc. Just was thinking it looks like every other fricken ascii roguelike and maybe doing 3x3 and reducing font size would be interesting. I'm trying to pick up a car battery in CDDA.
It's not past the weight limit but past the volume limit sightly. When I select "wield" to hold it in my hands, nothing happens and it's left on the ground.
What gives? This used to work in earlier versions.

It's an alright game from what I've played so far and seems to have some cool ideas behind it. I should start playing other roguelikes that /rlg/ seems to hate beyond no reason. Maybe Qud or Haque next time.

Your strength limits the maximum weight you can hold in hands. Having low health (or fracture) in one or both hands also makes the limit lower.
If object is too heavy, character would just silently ignore the command to wield it.
I remember having to install a car engine on a shopping cart just so I can grab and pull it twenty meters to the car I've been fixing, then uninstall it from the cart and install in the car.

You can get some really satisfying finds in DDA too, like a working vehicle or a /k/ommando basement, but it becomes less exciting as you become familiar with the game because they always have the same properties and do the same things.

Most other roguelikes don't have very fun loot, because they tend to be balanced around a more limited power ramp, and bonuses tend to be basic like +damage or +defense.
