To the last part, yes. For your first job, there is no "efficient leveling" - do your daily roulettes and the Main Scenario Questline, and you'll be fine. For everything after that

>Healer leveling is best with dungeons
>DPS leveling is best with Command Missions until 50, Palace of the Dead 50-60, and Stormblood dungeons after that
Do not use Battlecraft leves to level, save leve allowances for leveling your DoH/DoL. As far as classes go
Tanks:
>Gladiator (Swords and Shields, becomes Paladin at 30)
>Marauder (Axes, becomes Warrior at 30)
>Dark Knight (Greatswords, Heavensward, available at 50)
Healers:
>Conjurer (Staff, becomes White Mage at 30)
>Scholar (Tomes, one of the possible Arcanist job paths at 30)
>Astrologian (Star Globes, Heavensward, available at 50)
DPS:
>Pugilist (Fists, becomes Monk at 30)
>Lancer (Spears, becomes Dragoon at 30)
>Rogue (Daggers, becomes Ninja at 30, requires level 15 to unlock)
>Archer (Bows, becomes Bard at level 30)
>Thaumaturge (Magic, becomes Black Mage at level 30)
>Arcanist (Magic, becomes both Summoner and Scholar at level 30, and these two share gear but not levels)
>Machinist (Guns, Heavensward, available at 50)
>Samurai (Katanas, Stormblood, available at 50)
>Red Mage (Rapier and Magic, Stormblood, available at 50)
Arcanist is considered a DPS for queue purposes until Scholar is unlocked. At 20 or so you'll get to choose a Grand Company, they are mostly the same functionally with the exception of a few pieces of early game gear, and you can switch anytime Immortal Flames > Maelstrom > Badders
