Do pass the Google test. If the game is called "Adventure Castle" it will never be the first 3 results in Google.

Don't have a confusing name. For example "clever" misspellings to be unique will be hard to say when telling people ("It's brawling but instead of Aw it's ow") and hard to remember for the user.

Don't be generic. Words ending with Y is lazy (flappy bird).

Keep to 3 words max. Any more is super annoying to type out, and no one will know what your game's acronym is because no one plays your game in the first place.

If you want to make a level themed around blood, consider using flows of blood instead. It makes more sense since blood coagulates and it would just look brown everywhere. Right now it looks like a lot of stuff bled everywhere.

Marketting aspects and subtle aesthetics are beyond the expertise of most of the dev here.

I bet you'd say that Crossy Road is also a shit name, and you're right in some sense - as its a lame copy of generic shit mobile game name structure. However, it portrays exactly what the game is about, and the devs wanted to name their game in that way - for some irony.

Animations could be in theory because you're manipulating a skeleton instead of drawing each frame hand by hand.

It's somewhat raw, that's for sure, but the thing that made the first one so great was it put you in a world, not put the world in you. What I mean by that was that they pretty much made a vivid world how they wanted to make it, not a world that was misformed into a tunnel on rails like most games are. The closest thing to the souls games was probably Oblivion and Morrowind as well as maybe Onimusha.

Are there some good Unity tutorials which are not point and click? I tried out tuts from Brackeys, RPG course from Ben Tristem and am currently going through point-and-click RPG tuts from GameGrind YT channel because it seems really good, but I want to try making a platformer with normal controls (WASD/gamepad), OR at least have these RPG mechanics with normal controls. The problem is that all the interaction and combat are done with the mouse which means all the programming is different, as well as the movement since I have to use NavMesh for it. So basically I need something completely different.

Instead of watching tutorials to make your specific dream game you should use tutorials and guides to learn how to use the tools and go from there.
Reliance on a specific set of tutorials will only pigeonhole your game and restrict the creativity of your development.
At the end of the day tutorials will only get you so far and you'll have to use your knowledge and the skills you've learned to run off the rails and start doing your own thing. Nobody has a tutorial about how to make your game. Even if the genre is the same as the tutorial you're going through, eventually you'll find something that you want to do differently and hit a brick wall.

Learn the tools, buff your skills, man up, and do it yourself.

Like I said, from what I see, a lot of people are making point and click RPG tutorials. I'm just now scrolling through YT for some good platformer series, but only found one basic one. I want to know if there is something with some more depth, good coding practices AND which isn't too old.

Dude. There's a set of "official" Unity demos for all those cases. Point and click using navmesh finding, and regular WASD controls for 3rd person and 1st person. Import their fps or tps scripts and just drag the character controller script of your choice into your scene. It's not perfect but you got the source and can change anything you don't like.

3D platformers are basically 2D platformers except with a perspective camera, not orthographic. And in 3D you'd need to lock an axis.

In Unity most of the physics for 2D and 3D is roughly the same, just different labeled components (collider2D vs collider, rigidbody2D vs rigidbody, etc)

That's the thing. They're completely valid. The editor throws a valid reference, the object exists, but in someway, the pool's function fucks it up. But only for the first reference in the array if there's only a single bullet in the pool I think. And also, when bullets hit and get put back into the pool, they don't. Instead they duplicate the first reference in the array.
I doubt it is my fault because I have a big ego and it's just getting the first item in an array so it shouldn't work. But it's probably my fault since I barely slept since last friday.

The way some characters' feet are aligned to the ground is extremely jarring and ugly

The two offenders here are the girl in the front and the blue coated person. Their feet don't match their shadows at all, and the girl in front's feet doesn't look like they're aligned in 3D space at all.

Same goes for the heads of the mushrooms, they should be drawn with the same perspective as the ground, but don't.

If that makes any sense.

2D is alright with 3D as long as the 2D has a similar enough perspective to the 3D to mesh harmoniously. The actual art style looks rather nice if you ignore these facts.

The guard now patrols around, I place the nodes and the guard figures out the navigation by himself.
Each node has a custom wait time too, so he stays still once reaching a node for a few seconds.
I also refactored his movement a bit and now he uses the same movement component as the player, I disabled player chasing for the video since I still have to do better state transitions and such.

speed is tied animation speed. one of the shotguns was rebalanced between versions to come up on aim faster. no other gun in the game does this, though, so it was implemented in a wonky way. as a result, if you pause the game between coming up on aim and being able to control leon's point of aim, leon's overall speed is still set to that faster value. so you can move faster, and a lot of actions leon takes become broken. reloading some guns no longer works because leon finishes reloading before the ammo is added back to the gun, you clip into pushable objects because leon pushes them faster than the object moves, etc. a lot of enemy AI also breaks because the way they lead their attacks is hard-coded so they'll just whiff 90% of stuff.

hey guys, I've got a dev question which mostly boils down to math which I'm bad at. I'm not necessarily expecting anybody to solve this problem for me but I just need pointers in the right direction because I don't know what to Google search for.

I've got an interface in my game which basically a set of pages that you can click and drag around and zoom in on to read. Currently everything works as planned but I want to add a bit of juice.
Basically when a page is clicked and dragged around, I want to slightly tilt it that reflects the portion of the page that the user clicks on and which direction they drag it.

Obviously the math is going to involve the click position and the drag direction but I'm not sure what operations to perform to ensure that the page tilts in the correct direction.

This isnt 100% real world phisics, but will work:

Define a center for the page
On dragging take the cross product of the vector from the page center to the mouse click position and the vector of the direction and distance you are dragging
if you just want direction the magnitudes arnt needed so just drag direction is ok
Z component of cross product gives you rotation amount and direction, within reasonable limits

The light gem checks all lights in range, raycasts to them to detect shadows and calculates the light level using the same formula used to draw the lights, using their range, attenuation, and angle + angle attenuation in the case of spotlights.
The guard uses a similar spotlight formula for his vision so he sees things better the closer they are to the center of his vision, multiplied by the light gem's value of his target.

Last bit of progress for tonight, re-implemented mountains and trees spawning, and set up the system for resource-gathering. Tomorrow I'll work on Knight & Witch probably, but I should need just a couple more days to finish this game. Just need to
set up AI for the townsfolk, spawning them when you build something, making them 'change' from regular villager to woodcutter/miner/farmer etc
make the AI go around the map, gather resources and take them back
add some more buildings I already modeled, like a fisherman hut and fields that the farmers can cultivate (maybe even a barn? not sure)
manage the resources (more people = more food consumed, if people can't get enough food they'll die/leave, etc)
time management? for example, make it so trees take time to regrow, or cultivated fields only produce food in the spring
polish UI and presentation, make a tiny title screen and add a final goal if you survive for X time

It sounds like a lot of stuff but it should be all fairly easy.

There's a difference in setting out to make a game, and set out to build a resusable pile of code and when you're building something from scratch(or close to), it's quite easy to slip into the whole "generic"-mindset where you just try to make everything as generic as you can, and you start adding features that you'll "maybe" use in the future.

Finally finished my second game. It was a wild ride and even though I doubt it will have any player base, it was commissioned so I actually get paid!

Another person was assigned to work on this game with me or make a companion program but he didn't do anything and tried to ride my coattails gloating about, 'our' game and getting paid. Seeing as he knows nothing about the game and I didn't put his name in the credits I think I'm going to have him removed from the team. This was a 1MA effort and I don't believe he deserves any credit.

I once heard someone from AGDG mention it you're going to do AI program them as it the game is made for them and not for the player. It'll feel more organic when the enemy does something this way rather than contrived and scripted.

Full picking up + throwing is in now. Took awhile to get the trajectory right while having to think about how other non-destructible objects will react when thrown in the future. Ended up mixing a vertical translate + moveto + creating/enabling a rigidbody on the object as soon as it's thrown. Combined it makes for a decent effect that'll work with any type of object thrown, and I can easily change the weight/distance thrown on anything he picks up. I also added a slight pause when picking up an object to give a sense that theres a bit of a struggle. Some of the animations need to be worked on more however, and I still don't quite have a perfected "hold" on the object picked up, as if you look closely it's actually sitting a few inches above the players hands when he's holding it.

Sorry if the framerate is kinda shitty, once again too many programs open.

So I had the spawns working similar to how they did in Gauntlet where they spawn enemies until the player destroy them. All they really need along with the enemies will be degrading graphics as they lose certain amounts of health, but overall it isn't a priority. All that's really left is adding to the combat a little, probably different classes the player can choose, different enemies, and power ups. (Not to mention level design and graphics.) But overall I'mm seeing this as a vivid mix of Innawoods and Gauntlet.

Been working on the overworld, placeholder tiles and probably absolutely nothing about this will remain the same later.
Top highway areas still got to be redone, and I want to add a forest area to the west with a lake.
The town center has a church and graveyard, general store, and mayors office.

the C# garbage collector is pretty easy to control. you can add hints for when to collect, when not to collect, how often to collect, and of course you can learn to not create garbage in the first place, or at least minimize garbage.

read the msdn articles on the GC, they're very enlightening. the key thing to know is that unless you've hinted not to collect, allocation triggers collection. i.e. every new heap object is potentially a collection event. no new = no collection. but if it's a value type it follows stack rules instead and just falls out of scope, so no collection or cleanup needed.

check the civ 5 soundtrack for authentic egyptian beats. there's various reconstructions floating around.

the typical hollywood "egypt" sound probably comes from the arab inspired 10 commandments and lawrence of arabia scores. more arabian than egyptian but definitely fits the pop culture image better.

Not that guy, but i'll give it a go. Say you have a platforming game with jumping enemies.
Even a toddler can move a character right and left and jump, and even figure out when to jump when he wants to get onto a certain platform.

But letting a computer know when to make that choice is very very hard. One solution I could think of is that on the edge of every platform, there's an invisible line that drops down to the ground that says "a platform starts here". Then, any AI walking around can look ahead a bit, see the invisible line, and jump.

Human players are VERY smart, so we don't need things like that, but basically any extra data you can include in your levels for the AI to make use of will vastly improve the capabilities of your AI.

you need very advanced deep AIs with some beefy processing to do anything similar to that sort of instant vision assessment and reasoning a human does, narrow AI will see the game board one node at a time and have to retravel the nodes to simulate the possibility space. if you make the possibility space too much your AI is fucked.

Assuming your game is a stealth game, I'd probably define regions of different levels of shadow (either by hand or dynamically based on positions of lights, possibly both), and keep track of how shadowed the player is. There'd be a maximum cutoff, at which point the player is considered completely hidden and invisible; in that situation the AI wouldn't test for detection by sight at all. Otherwise, I'd do raycasts for line-of-sight and apply a distance penalty based on how much shadow the player is in (the darker the area, the closer the enemy has to be to detect the player). I'd also consider weighting the detection with a random factor based on shadow levels, and do a lot of playtesting around that to make sure it doesn't make the AI too unpredictable or otherwise frustrating for the player.

I badly want more BG/IWD, but I will never trust that it's done well until it's in front of me and I'm saying "hey this is great."

You can't skimp on writing, great systems (balanced but not *too* balanced you know?), inter-party relationships and banter, compelling story, living world, blah blah.
There are some people thirsty for this, dehydrated even. Pillars of Eternity almost scratches the itch, but honestly I think a smaller studio who didn't feel the need to push the graphics, would still find a very appreciative audience.
But everyone just goes "action RPG" because the writing is a whole craft itself, and lapsing in writing/story/characters in this kind of game is death. (We can give some of the retrospectively shitty writing in the IE games a pass due to historical context)

tldr an amateur pillars of eternity would be really good, but it's a thin line and hard to find good writers.

I like to refactor in small working steps, each step the game should still run and not loose any features, even if some steps add code that will be removed later. A lot of times this means making methods and public variables temporarily, or adding long strings of parameters to functions that I then slowly sort out and remove again as each part gets fixed properly, just to ensure it works at all times. Because I've found that once I break it I think we'll, it's not working anyway, so might as well fix that part as well, and this part, and this, and then I end up with a pole of code that is completely Brocken.

if what you are drawing doesn't have a win or lose state than it isn't a game, its a toy. You play with toys and games, but toys aren't games. This is agdg not atdg.

Any process in any game can be broken down to much simpler processes. For instance navigating a menu is simple, but actually making a strategy for your game plan through the menus is when all the components are working together.

In better examples of grinding games you have to optimize your grinding process and grinding is usually done to reach a goal you can't without minmaxing shit, which means there's some planning involved.
