Just finished Echoes and while it was an ok game I didn't really have fun with the gameplay. Literally all the maps in the game were just forests and boats and deserts, are Fates or Awakening any better?

Awakening has shit maps, Birthright's maps aren't great either. They're better to go through than SoV's, but still meh.

Conquest's maps are really good, but the writing is even worse. If you're looking for gameplay, I'd strongly suggest playing Conquest as it's pretty damn fun in those aspects.

The only thing that made that map tricky was that most of my good units had other blessings and my Earth team was Ike, Ninian, and two Askr shitters

I had to switch some people to Earth to make a more balanced team to clear it without leaving holes in my other teams
