Humans have always used mind altering drugs. It makes life more interesting for us considering our constant awareness of our own inevitable end.

Alcohol is probably the principle drug of choice because it's produced naturally (fermentation is easy and has always been an integral and ubiquitous aspect of global human culture). It's more of a fact of life rather than a force in and of itself, but how societies react to it are interesting. Of course lessons can be taken from prohibition in the US in the early 1900s, as well as the complete ban on alcohol consumption in Muslim nations. Take what you will from these recent examples.
