anglo-german lies

The English king's fiefdoms in France were technically owned by the French crown. The king of England was a de jure vassal of the French king as far as the Gasconian, Aquitanian etc. lands were concerned.

Germany

>muh de jure

De jure the Holy Roman Emperor owned every scrap inch of land in the HRE.

In practice, the only thing that matters is your ability to hold control over those lands. If you can't prevent your vassals from banging a foreign King and willing all their lands to the children of that coupling, you fucked up.
