woah dude look at those eyes.

Yep, it's Ivan the Terrible after killing his son in a rage.

>Stańczyk (Polish: Stańczyk w czasie balu na dworze królowej Bony wobec straconego Smoleńska, English: Stańczyk during a ball at the court of Queen Bona in the face of the loss of Smolensk) is a painting by Jan Matejko finished in 1862.

>Stańczyk, the male figure depicted in the painting, was the court jester when Poland was at the height of its political, economic and cultural power during the era of the Renaissance in Poland, during the reign of King Sigismund I the Old (reigned 1506–1548). He was a popular figure; besides his fame as a jester he has been described as an eloquent, witty, and intelligent man, using satire to comment on the nation's past, present, and future

>Stańczyk is shown sitting alone in a dark room, while a ball, hosted by the royal family, is in full swing in the neighbouring hall.

>On the table lies a letter likely announcing that Poland has lost Smolensk (now in Russia) to the Grand Duchy of Muscovy, causing Stańczyk's sorrow and reflection on his fatherland's fate.

>Karl XII:s likfärd (The funeral transport of Charles XII) by Gustaf Olof Cederström

>Charles was an exceptionally skilled military leader and tactician as well as an able politician, credited with introducing important tax and legal reforms. As for his famous reluctance towards peace efforts, he is quoted by Voltaire as saying upon the outbreak of the war; "I have resolved never to start an unjust war but never to end a legitimate one except by defeating my enemies". With the war consuming more than half his life and nearly all his reign, he never married and fathered no children.

>Exceptional for abstaining from alcohol and women, he felt most comfortable during warfare. Contemporaries report of his seemingly inhuman tolerance for pain and his utter lack of emotion.

>While inspecting trenches close to the perimeter of the fortress on 11 December (30 November Old Style), 1718, Charles was struck in the head by a projectile and killed.

Posting the truly rare one.

The reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks:

Sultan Mehmed IV to the Zaporozhian Cossacks:

As the Sultan; son of Muhammad; brother of the sun and moon; grandson and viceroy of God; ruler of the kingdoms of Macedonia, Babylon, Jerusalem, Upper and Lower Egypt; emperor of emperors; sovereign of sovereigns; extraordinary knight, never defeated; steadfast guardian of the tomb of Jesus Christ; trustee chosen by God Himself; the hope and comfort of Muslims; confounder and great defender of Christians - I command you, the Zaporogian Cossacks, to submit to me voluntarily and without any resistance, and to desist from troubling me with your attacks.

--Turkish Sultan Mehmed IV

The Cossacks' reply came as a stream of invective and vulgar rhymes, parodying the Sultan's titles:

Zaporozhian Cossacks to the Turkish Sultan!

O sultan, Turkish devil and damned devil's kith and kin, secretary to Lucifer himself. What the devil kind of knight are thou, that canst not slay a hedgehog with your naked arse? The devil shits, and your army eats. Thou shallt not, thou son of a whore, make subjects of Christian sons; we have no fear of your army, by land and by sea we will battle with thee, fuck thy mother.

Thou Babylonian scullion, Macedonian wheelwright, brewer of Jerusalem, goat-fucker of Alexandria, swineherd of Greater and Lesser Egypt, pig of Armenia, Podolian thief, catamite of Tartary, hangman of Kamyanets, and fool of all the world and underworld, an idiot before God, grandson of the Serpent, and the crick in our dick. Pig's snout, mare's arse, slaughterhouse cur, unchristened brow, screw thine own mother!

So the Zaporozhians declare, you lowlife. You won't even be herding pigs for the Christians. Now we'll conclude, for we don't know the date and don't own a calendar; the moon's in the sky, the year with the Lord, the day's the same over here as it is over there; for this kiss our arse!

- Koshovyi otaman Ivan Sirko, with the whole Zaporozhian Host.

Once the blockade of Leningrad began, Zhukov ordered the defenders to establish a bridgehead over the Neva River as a jumping-off point to link up with the expected relief forces from the Volkhov Front. On the evening of 19/20 September 1941, several rifle battalions managed to cross the Neva River on rafts near the town of Dubrovka and establish a small bridgehead, but German troops quickly arrived in force to hem them in. The tiny foothold was dubbed the 'five-kopeck bridgehead' since it was 1,400m wide and extended only 500m from the water's edge; this barren patch of mud had no trees, buildings or any kind of cover. German forces brought the bridgehead under constant artillery and machine-gun fire from three sides; during daylight hours, Soviet troops within the bridgehead could not walk upright and could only crawl.

Instead, the soldiers dug fighting positions in the muddy clay of the riverbank. The Leningrad Front kept sending more troops and a few tanks across each night, but the life expectancy ofsoldiers within the bridgehead averaged only three days. One wounded soldier who was fortunate enough to be evacuated from the bridgehead was Sergeant Vladimir Putin, father of the future Russian president. However when the ice began to break on the Neva in the spring of 1942, the 1,400 soldiers of the 330th Rifle Regiment, 86th Rifle Division, defending the Nevskaya Dubrovka (Nevsky Pyatachok) bridgehead became temporarily isolated. The Germans moved immediately to eliminate this thorn in their side.

At 2020hrs on 24 April, five German infantry assault groups from l/lnfanterie-Regiment 43 and 6. Kompagnie of Il/lnfanterieRegiment 1 (1.Infanterie-Division) led by Oberst Louis von Prock attacked and overwhelmed the 2nd Company of the 330th Rifle Regiment in close combat pushing a bulge into the bridgehead. The remainder of the 330th launched six desperate counterattacks on 25/26 April but failed to drive back the Germans and suffered heavy losses in the process. Soviet artillery support was minimal owing to ammunition shortages. An effort to get some KV-1 heavy tanks (1) across the ice-clogged river resulted in disaster. At 1040hrs on 27 April, the Germans hit both the north and southends of the bridgehead with the I and ll/lnfanterie-Regiment 1, supported by Pionier-Bataillon 1 and Artillerie-Regiment 1, quickly overrunning two-thirds of the bridgehead.

Most of the surviving Soviet troops were wounded and running out of ammunition. This depicts a German assault group (2) attacking the command post of the 330th Rifle Regiment (3) by the water's edge, where the last defenders held out until 21 OOhrs. At the very end, Soviet soldiers ran out of ammunition and fought back with shovels, bayonets and rocks, until they were snuffed out in a volley of grenades. A few, such as Major Alexander Sokolov, succeeded in swimming back to friendly lines, but the Germans captured 117 in the bridgehead and the rest of the regiment was dead. The Leningrad Front held the bridgehead for 222 days at a cost of about 30,000 dead, but the German success was temporary since Soviet forces crossed the Neva again on 26 August 1942.
