Whenever I see that helmet I can only think of this.

I'm glad you can admit as much.

Everything I have read says they did not even have full helms( like above) in 11th century or even shoulder or leg armour ;_;

Please prove this wrong

Does it hurt?

Are you that retarded cousin my buddy in the guard of Whiterun told me he has?

That is true. The great helm came about in the late 12th century. Before then, they wore only nasal and conical helmets, sometimes with a face mask.

...

Mail with tabard + Kettle hat is the most aesthetic medieval armor. Lobster pots are also top tier helmets during pike and shot

Looks cozy except for his feet
Why didn't they just invent boots
What the hell is wrong with these people

Can someone post how the early middle ages byzantine army looked like? always wanted to know that

After the Norman conquest, anglo saxon huscarls emigrated from England to serve in the Varangian guard, and they made up quite a sizeable portion at that point.

i-i like it

Pre norman conquest they just looked like standard late western roman footmen?

you mean what kind of armors did they wear? Mostly lamellar ans padded cloth armors. They use a lot of steppe nomads as mercenaries after the legion system was phased out and Lamellar was very popular with Huns cumans and turks.

here's a 6th century carving of what soldiers looked like

Thanks!

I'm not sure if i'm correct but it seems most cultures were using mainly the standard round shield until normans popularized the kite shield.

Depends who was fighting for them. Alans and other Turkic peoples fought without armor or with light lamellar while on horseback. The other tribes and peoples who fought on foot were equipped differently

Like so, but these are later examples

Here is a decent representation of Roman troop evolution from the rise, stagnation, and evolution of the Western Roman Empire. The East had similar styles to that 400AD model shown here. Not exact in style, because they varied person to person, but a good example none the less

A medieval representation of Byzantine shield designs is very interesting

i love that medieval lions have human faces

Puttees were widely used over the worldbuntil the second world war.

LATE ROME

...

No, you just can't handle the swagger

Varangian guard tho.

Look at that sexy helm and face mail combo

That aesthetic lamellar

Solid axe and round shield combo

Daily reminder that (most) of the Varangians were based, this illustration depicts a Thracian woman killing a Varangian who tried to rape her, and the other Varangians praised her and gave her the dead rapists belongings

sutton hoo helmet sucks balls

Using this as a background now, thanks mate

>Fucking asshole is always telling us what to do

Got rekt by turktoaches tho.

That helmet freaked me out as a kid. Looked like my father when he still had his pornstache.

sound senpai

Practicality is beauty

/r/ing byzantine troops. Cataphracts, foot soldiers, Varangians etc. post' em Veeky Forums.
