Pre-ironic cancer era - /b/, 2003 - 2008-10 (boxxy, macro memes)
Ironic Reddit Wars era - /v/, 2010 - 2013-14 (le monkey face, back to le reddit)
Post-ironic meme era - /tv/, 2014 - 2016 (Bane, smug Pepe)
Neo-fascist era - /pol/, 2016 - ??? (Trump, alt-right Pepe)

>tfw my time on Veeky Forums has spanned 4 eras

God please take my soul.

>Neo-fascist era - /pol/, 2016 - ??? (Trump, alt-right Pepe)
Should be labelled New Sincerity or death of irony desu

Veeky Forums political history:
2003-2014: lolbertarian
2014+ Fascist, alt-right, Populist, Trump

I know Veeky Forums is based on contrarianism but I can't see the general opinion going anywhere during a Trump presidency. Maybe lolbertarian again?

Yeah there's a couple of big events that happened in Veeky Forums history
-Scientology raids
-Loss of fortunes
-Yotube raids
-using captchas for posting
-Bawksie
-Moot leaving

Any others?

I have this suspicion that both libertarians and honest to god liberals will start to pop up, because anything that makes people on here mad is likely to become more commonplace.

Incidentally, social democracy is objectively the best way to organize a human society.

2003-2008: apolitical sincere shitposting
2008-2014: liberals and libertarian irony
2013: fascist and communist sincerity

loud minority desu. But who knows, if Trump disappoints his voterbase (and he will) you probably see more liberals or socdems pop up

I'm ready for the churn to bern.
All the old cuckold memes are going to need to be repurposed (or Veeky Forums becomes pro-cuckolding?)

Marxist

It's already starting

eh, it started shifting to socdem already

multiple mass turmoil/migration periods, most notably 7chan and gamergate

Early Veeky Forums wasn't libertarian (i assume you mean the american kind), it was apolitical with slight liberal/anarchist tendencies.

>liberal/anarchist tendencies.
so literally libertarian, amplified by Ron Paul, destroyed by the Tea Party

>People thinking the pendulum will ever swing back
Ha!

memes die.

Marxist

It's already starting

Anarchism and american libertarianism are opposites user.

Anarchism is socialist

No, it's not.

bullshit to both of you. GIT GOVERNMENT OUT OF OUR LIVES HURR is anarchist especially pre-tea party mainstreamification.

Try reading.

Not at least 25 years old era- 2003-now

Nope. That's right-libertarianism.

/pol/ today still seems pretty Libertarian. Honestly how do you people confuse Trump for a fascist?

you guys are getting hung up on the label, Veeky Forums was never ever formal-anarchist, no one ever said that and it would never happen because formal anarchist movements are pure hypocrisy so it doesnt matter what they think or do.
>apolitical with slight liberal/anarchist tendencies.
tendencide != formal affiliation just that 4channers are little-a anarchist and and little-l liberal so libertarian was a natural fit and Ron Paul was the vehicle.

...

>Social democracy
>Tenants are literally just liberalism with a welfare state
Gee no wonder

At first Veeky Forums was called itself the asshole of Internet, mostly known because of /b/, it was that nerd place that spotted time to time for the lulz, some of those things helped it to pop-up in a more mainstream audience.
>Anonymoose
>Tumblr/Reddit/9gag war
>Bitcoins and then cryptocurrencies
>Gamer-gate and then 8-chan exode

On the actual day Veeky Forums is higly mainstream. I think /pol/ has taken the following of /b/ on the edgy way, while /b/ doesn't seems as creative as it once was. Whatever I shouldn't spend more time here

No it hasn't. That was like a two week raid by lebbit
Ehh I interpreted it as libertarian, it was really just apolitical and racist

theres a Veeky Forums dominant era in there somewhere

I'm not saying Trump is fascist, I'm just saying Veeky Forums is general is pretty unironically pro-nazi/fascism

2012 was the zyzz/incel era

>unironically pro-nazi/fascism
not sure i believe this. mainstay of Veeky Forums has been ironic pro-nazism. i think you're mistaking post-irony for unironic.
youtube.com/watch?v=GY_meT6x45w

> social democracy is objectively the best way to organize a human society.
lol just throw that hot opinion in there

The eras should be determined by which board culture dominates Veeky Forums.

2003 -2004 - /a/
2005 - 2009 - /b/
2010-2012 - /v/
2013 - /sp/
2014-2015 - /tv/
2016 - present - /pol/

in your dreams lol

Hello samefriend

hmmmm, really makes me think

Spot on
Still some heavy /tv/ influence though

can euros stop getting so butthurt about definitions when it is obv what American posters mean.

>/pol/
Recycled memes from /tv/ desu

/v/ was 2010-2013 with an interregnum of /sp/ in 2011.

>death of irony
If only. "Ironic" shitposting has only been getting worse.

And Veeky Forums

>high test
>manlets
>no homo
>fat people stories/hate

Fuck off, /leftypol/

What do you call social democracy without democracy and with nationalism? Really wondering now because that would be the perfect system. Spengler advocated that shit too.

Is it just national socialism or does it have some other name?

Pic related is very much what happened. 2016 is probably when ironic shitposting translated to actual shitposting. Especially made worse when the former was inane (for the lulz) by nature while the former had a goal or purpose.

Kinda of like trolling these days

What shitposting are you referring to exactly?

Veeky Forums remains the same by and the large the only thing that changes era to era is the style of the shitposting veneer people get too caught up in.

some type of communism or peronism or something.

or whatever it is that marshal tito led in yugoslavia. perfect totalitarianism, right there is a man who had it right.

>Shitposting
Best I give an example. If you count baneposting and kekposting as shitposting. When the plane crash in Bains, baneposting skyrocketed with the idea that "memes transcended reality you guys!" (The question : "Where were you when memes transcended reality?" regularly appearing in OP's post) It was rather inane and retroactive. It more or less had no purpose other than to give fuel to more ironic baneposting in /tv/. Most fun I had in a while desu

Then the idea of "memes transcended reality" start to take form in Kekism in /pol/. It started out quite inane too, but it is /pol/ so that meme started to have a purpose. Kekism meme is being to push Trump and 'smite' his detractors as /pol/ makes a collage of celebrity who were anti-Trump and have bad things happen to them as the doing of kek. Kekposting stopped being inane and more like propaganda in a way than baneposting ever was.

Also to add a lot of 'prayers' to Kek to support Trump. You can argue it is ironic when it is done with a desired purpose or outcome

Do they actually believe that shit though?

2003: Originalfag
2004-2006: Oldfag
2007-2009: Newfag
2010-2012: Cancer
2013-2015: Reddit
2016-present: Le 9gag

Had to put it in picture form because the retarded system thinks it's spam.

...

...

...

That is a question no one can answer. But the sense of purpose in kekposting is rather telling of them believing in it imo.

Veeky Forums was edgy leftwing contrarian in 2007-2008.

Many of us do and many of us just know there's some higher power involved with the shitposting.

Personally I think Kek or whoever is causing this is only manifesting to us through memes, it's not actually *us* doing this.

Kind of like Jesus first revealed his shit to Galilean fishermen, Kek's apostles are shitposters.

Jesus Christ.

It indeed was, it spilled over to 2009 too and I'm glad that shit is over.

what about r9k? with smug frog, "REEE" forever alone, rare pepes, wojak, stacey/chad, alpha/beta

where did the cuck meme come from? pretty sure it was from /gif/ but got popularized on /tv/ and then /pol/

>wojak
This is KC meme. I don't understand why people on Veeky Forums constantly steal memes from other websites and then claim they invented them, it's absurd.

And cuck meme and (((echoes))) come from TRS, so not Veeky Forums either.

It's from /tv/ with all the blacked.com posting. Before 2014 we had a different word for cuck and it was NTR.

Stronger than that.

there needs to be historian for internet memes

TRS?

Still used on /a/ and, occasionally, /v/ and Veeky Forums.

It was especially pronounced on /a/ and /news/. Many of us loved the change Obama promised and saw Bush as a puppet controlled by a fascist.

Been awhile since then, and I hope I leave here before it switches back.

only to rise again

>It was especially pronounced on /a/ and /news/.

I always remember that as the proto-/pol/. Or was that just the second incarnation of /news/?

I saw a frenchman unironically create a thread to pray to kek and meme marion le pen into france's president

>memes affect real world politics.
sure.

Yeah.

What the fuck is TRS?

The Right Stuff.biz

Its just the Climax of the Post-Ironic era I'm sure. The meme Alt-right turned into full blown Literal Alt-Right sooner than we realized.

Oh so its just /pol/ why didn't you say so?

The Right Stuff.

TRS is playing /pol/ like a damn fiddle

/n/ was like a combination of /news/, /pol/, /int/, and /x/ in its early days. Lots of shilling Ayn Rand and libertarianism, lots of conspiracy theories and HAPPENING threads. But obviously it was a much smaller community then, and there weren't mobileposters, so niche threads could exist alongside larger ones.

I assumed TRS was just some offshoot of /pol/.

It's not an Euro vs US thing, it's an educated vs uneducated thing.

Actually it's the other way around, /pol/ is an offshoot of places like TRS, AmRen and Iron March, at least if we're talking about modern /pol/ and not the lolbergtardian /pol/ of yesteryear.

yep
all of pol's ideas come from those people

Who here Pre-ironic era?

ahahahaha

Remembering as best as I can with dates given rough approximations

>2003 and 2004; The dawn
Inconsequential for the most part. The vast majority of people who were on this website when it opened were weeb blowovers for 2chan and a handful of people who found their way here from somethingawful. coordinated pranks and raids where much more common.

>2005, 2006, and 2007; Adolescence
created and/or popularized some of the Internets most (in)famous memes, such as lolcats, rickrolling, pedobear, Chocolate rain. Raids continued, even though they were technically not supposed to

>2008; The rubicon
Probably the biggest turning point in the history of the site. Project Chanology, for better or for worse, drew a great deal of media attention and with it followed many Normies. Also, Encyclopedia Dramatica was in full swing by this point and they had done a thorough job of of cataloging all of our cherished memes. Raids at this point were a shadow of what they used to be

>2009 and 2010; internal strife
The sites traffic exploded during this time and with it came a great resentment between the weebs and basement dwellers who were here since the place opened and their new Normie roomates. 4chans signature board, /b/, was hereafter condemned to stagnation and redundancy that persists still to present. /v/ was in the spotlight this time around and would stay there until they were dethroned by /pol/ some years later

>2011, 2012 and 2013; The birth of /pol/
Stagnation continues everywhere, the most interesting thing to happen to this place during this time was the Explosion of My Little pony, which is pretty sad. With most of the rest of the site still festering in their own civil wars of sorts, /news/ was transformed to /pol/. But /pol/ itself would need to develop a great deal. Promoting Ron Paul was probably their most noteworthy endeavor until they reached the next stage of their life

cont...

>2014; Gamergate, and the transition of /pol/
Gamergate threads getting banned on /v/ is likely what prompted most /v/irgins to migrate to either /pol/, /r9k/ or both. /pol/ themselves would undergo a drastic transition in december of 2014. As payback for their shenanigans, m00t had 'experimented with capcha-free posting' using /pol/ and the place was flooded with raids from every corner of the sight. It was around this time that /pol/ ceased to be a place where ACTUAL stormfags and paranoid anarchists gathered and turned into something that looks not unlike what we know it as today; An angrier, raunchier, meaner, more hyperbolic and NSFW version of /int/. You can thank the addition of flags for that.

>2015 and 2016: The Trumpstaffel
Prior to Trump announcing his bid, /pol/ was extremely bitter about the forecast for the 2016 presidential race; it was to boil down to either a second Clinton or a third Bush. But after Trump announced his bid, the meme machine was more than happy to contribute to his campaign in any way possible. It is hard to say with any certainty how much /pol/ actually helped Trump take the election, but it is certain that their efforts, propaganda and activism drew more and more traffic to their board, be it from other boards or outside of Veeky Forums altogether. Trump won the election and while /pol/ was certainly happy to relish in their victory, they've long since been resigned to dealing with the outsiders that are now making (if at all possible) their board even more toxic

>2017: The fall of /pol/
As I type this, we are only three days into the new year; However, given my observations of this sight, I think it is fair to make this assessment; all that boards that have been associated with real world activism and controversies go through a fairly cyclical routine

cont

>The people who started using the board when it first opened or shortly thereafter make a name for themselves through some controversy that spills over into the larger internet or media altogether
>They stand their ground, asserting why they hold the positions that they do.
>The results vary; With project Chanology, they made their voice heard. With gamergate, they got their asses handed to them by m00t and the mods. With the Trump campaign, their man won the election
>What does not vary is the consequences. The consequence is always the same regardless of how their efforts pan out;
>While they were making their case for the whole world to see, they attracted a shitload of attention to themselves and wound up with people from other parts of Veeky Forums or outsiders altogether flooding their board and shitting it up, ultimitaley condeming the board to stagnation, not unlike what /b/ has been for years now
>It happened to /b/ after Chanology, it happened to /v/ after gamergate and it is happening to /pol/ as you read this
>Some of the inhabitants of said flooded board opt to migrate to a different board and later down the road, they find themselves attached to another controversy that spills over into the larger internet or media altogether
>and the cycle repeats

/pol/ is at the end of that cycle right now. I haven't a clue what the next controversy will be or which board will be associated with it, but when it does happen, I guarantee you will find plenty of people that are veterans of Chanology, Gamergate and the Trump campaign prolonging the cycle

For all we know, Veeky Forums may be the next battlefield

Interesting how all these old maymays are downright reddit tier today.

What I find weird is how come Veeky Forums isn't proud of creating the Kek meme? Literally the first Egyptian God of Chaos threads first appeared on Veeky Forums yet everyone pretends like this board is just Marx and shitposting about Africa.

> reddit tier
> reddit
> tier
they're fine, much more involved than facial expression frogs and epic laughing reaction pics

2003-2004 /a/ and /b/ were pretty much the same thing. The main difference was that one board was sfw, while the other wasn't.
