They both were quite terrible, but I think there is a key difference in that the nazis went about killing people in a very scientific and industrial manner, while the commies just stuck to the old ways which while they did kill many people were not as bad as I think the nazis would have been had they been allowed to survive.

For the everyday Germans that weren't Jewish, disabled, mentally ill or of gypsy descent, I'd say life was better (until England started bombing them) than for the average Soviet system.

However, the holocaust was mass produced genocide, and I can't really think of a Communist example of such cold genocide.

But, on the other hand, the other communist states, such as in Cambodia were both crazy and brutal. Stalin was just neglectful and as cruel and coldhearted as most dictators are.

On the whole, if you're comparing just the USSR and Nazi Germany, I'd say it's slightly worse for your average USSR citizen, but the Nazis' systematic purging of minority groups was still inhumane.

However, once you add in other communist regimes, then communism becomes clearly worse. Killing fields, for example. Or the Great Leap Forward's famine, and Cultural Revolution.
