The way the Swedish army managed to bolster an army was incredibly smart. The so called Croft system allowed the king to have a large supply of manpower for his campaigns and reduce the costs drastically.
1. In every village, the local farmers build a comfortable cabin by order of the local lord or king.
2. This cabin is given a number, #31
3. When a young man decides to volunteer in the Swedish army he is assigned a number. #31 in this example
4. As payment for his duties, he is given the cabin to live in. He is allowed to marry and move his family into his cabin.
5. The Swedish army usually had campaigns for a short while, most of the year #31 would be free of all duties. He could grow some crops in his garden and teach the local children in exchange for money (soldiers were often literate).
6. When a new military campaign started, he would return afterwards to his family in the cabin. However, the death toll was quite high and there was a chance that he would live no longer than a few years in his cabin.

This system was incredibly popular and many young men were eager to be compensated with housing in exchange for their blood. It made a large standing army viable for the Swedish kingdom, which was small in population size.
However, as European countries decided to shift to large conscripted armies and became a better alternative to the tradtional croft system. Its original use faded away and was replaced as a national monument of old Swedish ways.

honestly, this isn't really that different than what happened in every other country throughout history, just more formalised. Every society has rid itself of large numbers of its surplus young men by sending them off to die in wars.
Young men are simply disposable. Always have been, always will be.
