Virtually all governments of the world would denounce it as crazy and oppose it. The pope would be lose tremendous credibility with many nations governments.

It depends on the degree of ecumenism and the limit on what qualifies as just war.
If all the patriarchs unanimously stated that defending Christians in the Levant is not sinful, and in fact is an act of repentance, then you would get interest, because that isn't unreasonable from a certain perspective, but most of the patriarchs are in very difficult situations, being minority faiths in their sees.
