So? The elections weren't free. The argument is not about whether communists were or not violent. And the violence of the nazis wasn't limited to communists.

It seems like no one answered your question. The real reason for this is simple. The elites were interested in destroying the republic. This is for example the reason why Hitler wasn't jailed for life or killed for his putsch which was practically a high treason. This and the fact that Hitler knew too much about the Bavarian government's preparations for their own putsch.

Most major political forces around 31-32 were interested in moving away from the republic, this is true. But over the course of those months of political tumult there was absolutely no guarantee that the republic would be replace by a Nazi party autocracy. Right up till the von Papen chancellorship the vast majority of political leaders considered the NSDAP a fringe party joke that would eventually peter out. (And indeed in 1932 there were a lot of signs that were showing the NSAP was losing it's momentum).

For instance, Bruning had a strong mind to degrade and eventually remove the republic in 30-31. But his ideal replacement was a return to a traditional bismarckian monarchy.

It's fairly true, but 'buffoon' is probably not an accurate way of putting it.

Elite political circles considered the Nazi's shallow. They were catchy slogans, powerful aesthetics, and flashy public demonstrations. To them, none of that was a prerequisite for good leadership. To them the Nazi's were juvenile, brash, compulsive, and extremely inexperienced.

In a moment immediately after Hitler's selection as chancellor, von Papen is quoted consoled a worried colleague, "We've engaged him for ourselves. Within two months we will have pushed Hitler so far into a corner that he'll squeak."

This is very, very far from the truth.

Throughout the vast majority of the Weimar years the traditional right wing parties all despised the Nazi's. They only finally came around to him in the end as a form of placation.

To be fair, the Weimar judiciary did have a right wing bias, but that was mainly because they hated the republic more than the hated the Nazi's.

He kind of won an election by getting 37% in 1932, which was a good deal of the reason why he was appointed chancellor.
