Trading cities have usually been rather cosmopolitan and hardly been subject to a single culture. Also, if you asked the cities themselves they usually preferred independence.

People need identity, that's why. People with Roman heritage have no problems, because there is no Rome anymore. Now imagine being highly dependent of your German neighbour in the past, with legitimate claims to your fatherland being around all the time. Feels bad, man. However Germans and Balts have co-existed and interbred for centuries, they're basically brothers.

You know most Germans can move there and trade freely so it is not as though they are being oppressed on the individual level. It is just that the German state, that belligerent hostile entity through history, is now limited to the German homelands. They're lucky it wasn't divided into quaint princely states like Churchill wanted.

Bitch where? Might have been german traders but traders don't build they trade. It was architecture of the Italian states. Specific styles do arise that give the significance of "German style" but no don't forget Germany was almost literally a thousand city states all trying to one up the other.

Traders had families, wealth attracted craftsmen and so on. We know very well who was living and building those cities because the church kept record of all births and deaths.
But it wasn't built by Slavs. It was a Slavish village. Later it was merged with a German city, Neu-Cölln. Slavs are an integral part of the German people. By that logic, Germans could as well claim all Slavic territories.
