The Renaissance was the pinnacle of Western Civilization

>The Renaissance was the pinnacle of Western Civilization

Honestly the 18th century is the GOAT century and anybody who doesn't agree is probably just memeing. Humans will never reach that high of a point of culture again.

>if we tell narratives plucked from the air about our culture and history and mold them to our prejudices, that counts as history and archaeology, right?

>USA was created
>French revolution
Nah the 18th century was shit for those two things alone. Now 17th and the absolutist catholic monarchies were GOAT.

That's the wrong way of holding a vinyl disc you turboretard.

The 19th century was the pinnacle

More like the beginning of everything cascading down the shitter.

>everything was better before
>world is bad now

I love how the enlightenement guys thought all that came before them was so backwards and evil they literally had to invent stories about those times in order to make them sound really bad.

>french revolution
>bad

>world now is filled with mass surveillance and jaded tech
>20th century was one of the worst centuries in history
>as was the 19th
>anything before that was caveman tier compared to how we live now
Has it always been shitty?

I can't name a single thing about it that wasn't shit somehow.

>Now 17th and the absolutist catholic monarchies were GOAT.
I hope you like being really cold and having plague coming back every 10 years for a hundred years.
And that is not talking about some of the most terrible wars of the modern era.

>most terrible wars
Mostly happened in protestard lands

>anything past 300 A.D

>"Western Civilisation" peaked with Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire

For a small elite. Don't forget poor house, rookeries, syphilis, opium dens ect.

>the world went shit after the french revolution

>the enlightenment was a good idea

>Cultural Marxism is destroying the West

Always this fucking shit, every time with this fedora argument.

>but think of the ABSOLUTE FUCKING DREGS OF SOCIETY not so pretty now huh thought so faggot

In 100 years people will be saying 2017 sucked cock because there were junkie hobos in St.Louis and starving niggers in Africa.

>Why yes, I am a monarchist
>Colonialism was a good thing

No, It's Roman era

>implying it isn't

The 18th century was actually an incredibly troubled time for many places socially and politically. Not even the guy you replied to, but goddamn man ease up.

>the pinnacle of Western Civilization

what a meaningless fucking term

colonialism was all right desu

So, which opinions about history are non-fedora?
Is there a comprehensive list somewhere?
If not, one should be made so we can follow it and never be wrong.

>In 100 years people will be saying 2017 sucked cock because there were junkie hobos in St.Louis and starving niggers in Africa.
Yes, and they will be right.

It's easy to see if a opinion is non-fedora or not
>Do you disagree with it?
>Do you have more fedora pictures saved on your computer than the one who agree with it?
If yes to those, it's a fedora opinion

Thank user, I'll start saving pictures.

We literally live in an age where man has gone to the fucking moon and we have porn and guns.
No, fuck you, you would cry without your internet.
Right now is the coolest time.

>*teleports behind you*
The renaissance can easily be regarded as a low point in western civilization as 99% of the populace was exploited in favor for small sum of bankers and wealthy elite at the top of the social ladder with high tax rates and pointless wars for simple desires of profit along with the choke-hold the church had upon all scientist, architects, doctors, surgeons, politicians, and anyone who opposed the rule of the church and power of the pope were subjected to harsh penalties of imprisonment, banishment, or even death, which stagnated the advancements of humanity for centuries to come.
>*plunges tachi into your back, leaving you in a lifeless heap*
Nothing personnel kid

This guy gets it.

God you're pathetic

the destruction of the old regime that was running the country into the ground in nearly every way.

I agree that the revolution's result was shit, and that the revolutionaries dependence on the totalitarian work of Rousseau was bad, but it was better than letting the monarchy stay as it was.

Yes

The Renaissance was degenerate DESU senpai but only Wizards understand this

in terms of philosophical advancements, the 18th is the best century, though one could easily argue for the 400s into the 300s B.C. (improvement-wise, which is how I judge these things)

science goes to the 19th century but is closely followed by the years 1550 to 1650, the Hellenistic age (during and after Aristotle essentially founded science, which christian scholastics proceeded the fuck up by enforcing it as dogma), and most of the Abbasid Caliphate.

In terms of technological advancement, standard of living, and economic expansion, I would go with the 19th century.

theatrical improvements would go to the Greeks of the 400 to 100 BC (since we don't know the exact dates of many of the classic Greek plays sry) for the rest of the arts I would say that goes to the hundred year span of 1450 to 1550 or the 20th century, I leave that coin flip to you since I can't choose between either of them cause both time periods were awesome for that.

did I miss anything? C&C?

The word Renaissance sounds alot better than the Dark Ages

Nice mass information network called the Internet.
This is humanity's peak. (It's library of Alexandria * library of Baghdad * printing press)^infinity

Give me an (or multiple) example(s) of this

>Dark Ages

>dark ages

stop memeing

>right now is the best time ever because I can live to be a decrepit 103 year old thanks to modern medicine and also I can jack off to hentai doujins and also I don't need a job because of unemployment benefits

>strawman the post

>is posting in strawman: the thread

good point

a troubled time for niggers. Literally noone gives a fuck about starving niggers in africa and noone ever will.

weeb shit aside, this is objectively true

what other periods of history could the average, even poorest, citizens could read, write, and be actively involved in their local government? Not to mention the ability to travel safely.

>these are good things.
Wew

Who says this?

18th century philosophy is shite.
With zero quality-control and somebody watching over your shoulder at every moment.

when I was in public school they used to hype up the renaissance like it was the best thing to ever happen in Europe

Voltaire, Rousseau, Baron d'Holbach, Diderot, Hume, Kant, Smith (kind of), Franklin, La Mettrie, Jean le Rond d'Alembert, Marquis de Condorcet, Jean Baptiste Joseph Delambre, Helvétius, Cesare Beccaria, Montesquieu, Wollstonecraft, Mendelssohn, Lessing, Francis Hutcheson, Adam Ferguson, Johann Gottfried Herder, Hugo Stumberg Kołłątaj, Giambattista Vico.

>18th century philosophy is shite

U wot m8?

>Any period other than today is the pinnacle of Western Civilisation

Oh wow, a list of terrible 'philosophers.'

The embodiment of the fedora, the worst century of them all.

End of the 19th and the very start of the 20th century. Victorian/Edwardian days to the Brits.

The peak of European Imperialism.

>it's not muh hagel

19th century philosophy is shit.

hegel is terrible too.

and what would you suggest, the 19th century full of edgelords and irrational collectivists, or the 20th century full of absurdists and neo-marxists? perhaps you are an old fashioned soul and prefer the hedonistic epicureans or the knuckleheaded stoics of Rome, or perhaps further back to the self contradictory methods and thoughts of the stagirite and the totalitarian methods of the academic and this reality of unknowable ideal forms?

honestly, if your going tell me that my choices are negative, at least provide me with your supposed positive.

>irrational
Fuck off Platonist.

I agree.

Germany has a repetitive cycle of becoming dominant in a field and promptly ruining it. German idealism is shit-tier philosophy and I hate that people praise Kant like he was the second coming of Christ. Same goes for Hegel, though he gets his figurative dick sucked a tad less.

Wow, it's almost as if you did not read what I just wrote

Why would I do something for you?

>poor people can read and write
>a good thing

...

>Now HERE'S a band of diverse and oppressed *individuals* who'll appreciate my edgy, caring virtue signalling!

modern society is cancer, I would never assume what people serve as the subject for most social legislation are nearly as oppressed as the press or intelligentsia say they are, the people who made that mistake ended up killing billions. Don't you worry, I shall resolve to not make that mistake

Modern society is what's keeping billions alive. If you regress you'll kill more people than the people you hate combined

I know that, I just think the path it's currently on is generally crap as it usually has. I don't know if it is just my pessimism ( so when things actually go right it feels all the better since we live in a world of woe) or it is objectively true that the world is crap. Yes, we are sustained by the great gifts of countless men and women since the days of Ur, but we are hardly in the ideal state of human existence, I have no intent to regress, it is barriers to progress that I hate. religious bigotry, meddlesome and top heavy government bodies, deluded identity politics, etc. I am tired, and I fear that my mind is loosing some of it's lucidity to the point that I sound disgustingly fedorable, I assure you, I hope progress can be achieved without resorting to "antifa" levels of violence and hypocrisy. I am no murderer, and I am no regressive.

what are the origins of this pic?

I have no idea, I just use it as a caricature of myself. I don't know it's origin.

what about starving niggers in Africa? Do they care?

not to be overbearing but could we use more polite language when referring to black folks? I thought this board was made to avoid that sort of /pol/ tier crap.

To answer your question, no, most countries are content to keep killing each other on tribal lines and at the behest of whatever warlord is in power that year. Surprisingly enough, I hear Rwanda is doing pretty well for itself these days, they've really straightened themselves out over the past decade. Got a healthy working class, a fairly efficient government, and a growing middle class.

how does "Negro" become "Nigger" anyway? How does someone fuck up that bad? Also second part is true.

The variants neger and negar derive from the Spanish and Portuguese word negro (black), and from the now-pejorative French nègre. Etymologically, negro, noir, nègre, and nigger ultimately derive from nigrum, the stem of the Latin niger (black) (pronounced [ˈniɡer] which, in every other grammatical case, grammatical gender, and grammatical number besides nominative masculine singular, is nigr-, the r is trilled).

The Oxford English Dictionary traces the first English use to 1577, "the Nigers of Aethiop", translated from the Spanish los negros in Ethiopia. Other early spellings attested include "nigor" and "Nigre"; the first spelling of "nigger" is in 1608. The OED offers as its first definition "Used by people who are not black as a relatively neutral (or occasionally positive) term, with no specifically hostile intent" and notes that early citations "expressing patronizing views, reflect underlying attitudes rather than a hostile use of the word itself". The second meaning, of "a hostile term of abuse or contempt" from whites to blacks is first attested in print in 1775. Its use by black people both "as a neutral or favourable term" and "as a depreciatory term" go back to 1831 and 1834 respectively.

copied from Wikipedia. (TL;DR: translations of negro to English as well as the mixing of Spanish and Portuguese dialects with Vulgar Latin (which was still used as a written language back in the day) multiple translations led to variations of the same word the at eventually became 2 distinct ones.

pic kinda related
