I mean, if it were just your typical South American shithole it would be one thing, but Haiti seems to be way below that, worse than a lot of African countries even. What went so horribly wrong?

-Up until as late as 1949, they were still paying "reparations" to France for their citizens' "lost property". The US paid some of it, but this still accounted for an actually noticeable percentage of Haiti's tiny GDP that could have gone to literally anything else.
In short: the French are/were extremely shifty even by colonial standards.

On top of that the now freed slaves had now idea to to run the economy or agriculture and destroyed their crops within a couple of years, making them destitute in a harsh, disease ridden environment.
