Yeah..no. Get gud. All it's doing is downloading data, if your computer is crashing because of that it's an issue with your equipment, Most likely software related. Don't be a whiny twit and instead try and figure out what the problem is. Unless your running a computer from the early 2000's, and even then it would work, Your have software issues. Don't open Mist it's a waste of time. Use the command prompt to navigate to the directory of geth.exe (use cd = change directory).
Firstly your going to have to delete the blockchain you've downloaded.
So start geth through command prompt by running geth.exe removedb
then hit y and enter.
Then start geth in cmdprompt by typing geth.exe and add --fast --cache=1024 or 2048.
That increases the ram is uses and it'll only download the start of each chain. Should be about 20 GB and should be done it about 8 hours or so.

This issue happened to me as well. I found that using a solid state drive helped dramatically, however targeting the external drive with geth was a bit of a pain. Either way, it's way to complex for normies to even attempt. this is rate limiting in my mind.
