Less succesful hunters might be a net food drain, and they want until the day they can "hit it big". Gatherers are reliable , but they'll never generate as much surplus as a sucesful hunter. Meaning they'll never have much to share, and won't increase their standing in society.

Ironically, this is a SJW comic complaining about signalling. Also ends with a non-sequiteur jab on men.

Idk you seem to assume that hunters regardless of ability can produce food as reliably as gathers with the same amount of risk. If anything it is gathers with their consistency that leads to agriculture

Comics have always been a joke in the writing department for the most part, and now comic writers have got the idea that they are social commentators saying some real important stuff. Vegan feminist bullshit. Once farming replaced hunting and gathering, the men stopped abandoning the women for long periods of time and were consistently at home to domineer and restrict them. Women became marginalized because men STOPPED hunting.

Besides that, the gatherers hardly "provided far more food." Animal products are an exceptionally bioavailable source of protein, and all studies of ancient skeletons demonstrate that early adopters of farming and agriculture were in much poorer health than their hunter-gatherer predecessors. And even ignoring the importance of hunting, farmers provided WAY more food than gatherers ever could have, and the farmers were men, not women. Once again, women did not become second-class citizens in contemporary society until men took over the food providing, and had much more autonomy when the men were hunters rather than farmers.

Agriculture was more derived from the flooding at the end of the last ice age. A bunch of plants are flooded over which opens space for wheat and rice to take over. As long as you keep it watered, it gives you a resource that you can surplus.

At the same kind, the "elites" in the tribe have ever increasing showoffs of conspicuous consumption. Something that can be stored as a surplus is amazingly powerful, especially when it makes up a majority of the food energy that most people get.

Agriculture was a physiological disaster if bones are telling the truth. The generations that transition from hunter to farmer seem to exhibit higher rates of stunted growth, tooth decay, weakend bones, etc.

Farming is pretty much a multi-thousand year breeding program to unite common labor and elite consumption.

It's unlikely our ancestors were such blind utilitarians that whoever got the most """"food"""" was somehow the most interesting or worthy of praise, kind of like how today we don't watch films about Bill Gates unless it's a high stakes drama or porn parody.

Also meat and berries are not perfectly exchangeable. You need both to survive well and thus the harder task is likely to be seen as the most important one to be done.
