I have relatives who visited the USSR in the 60s-70s. The entire thing about them being literally Africa and lying about their statistics isn't really true. People were quite poor, living spaces were relatively small, and certain types of food weren't readily available like they were in the West. However, people weren't starving or seriously malnourished generally, and living conditions weren't like those of most poor countries.
