Humans do change, but it's an extremely gradual process and happens at a pace far, far to slow to suit the tastes of the average person.

Change is a function of repetition: the more we do something, the more it influences our behavior. It happens so slowly that we don't even realize that it's happening until after it's taken place.

So in practical human terms, trying to change in order to win somebody else's approval is fucking retarded. We define relationships by shared interests and though people can fake an interest, it's not sustainable. Eventually the person becomes exhausted trying to keep track of all the lies (either to themselves or to others) and their true identity asserts itself and can even push back against conscious exertions. And even worse, when people believe that they can readily and simply change another person it can encourage them to be manipulative or scheming.

This is why most women grow out of their "bad boy" phase sometime in their mid-20's: they begin to realize that "the jerk with a heart of gold" is a Hollywood trope and that bad boys grow into bad husbands, bad fathers, and bad people. It dawns on her that he's not going to stop that kind of behavior because of how readily our society enables it. If she's lucky she makes this realization before he humps a baby into her and she can move on with her life to someone who is a true alpha. If not, well, ask anyone who has to deal with Baby mama/daddy drama how much fun it is.
