Their uniforms, webbing, and equipment are all 20th-century Imperial German, but the most defining feature is that the tall soldier has a wartime-simplified "Ersatz" Model 84/98 bayonet clearly visible on his belt, meaning this was definitely taken during WW1. The reason for the out-dated Gew.71 rifles is that they are Reservists, probably still in their training company.
