The Romans always fought defensive wars.

I'll not deny, friend, I have a Gallic look about me, but I'm as solid a Roman as anyone!

Truly the most defensive of wars

They had to defend Provence

Your grandfather (maybe your great-grandfather, you seem a bit edgy) was a humble man. He went to school and worked a part time job. He didn't know about geopolitics. He didn't care about the Sudetenland, but he believed that it was wrong to kill innocents.

So when his nation was attacked and dragged into the century's madness, he quit his job, he left his girl to be fucked by jody, and he left his mother crying and got on a bus to the other side of a continent, where he was beaten and drilled and dieted until he was ready to kill. He'd never shot a man before but inside of 3 months he was on a beach doing just that. He watched his friends old and new die in common, utterly understandable, and completely brutal ways. He lived through the sort of Hell that only man can make. He may have seen the extermination camps, but most of those were on the eastern front - left for the Stalinists to take over.

Your flesh and blood went through hell. He spent the rest of his life having nightmares of ruined cities and German bayonets. He could never bring himself to confess he where he learned the phrase, "food prostitution," nor how often he paid so little. After all, most casualties were caused by starvation. He carried the shame and the regret and the nightmares with him his whole life.

But he never regretted it. He accepted the butcher's bill because he knew Nazism -blind hate, genocide, fascism- he knew these things would cover the world and destroy all good. He could smile whenever he saw his children growing up safe and free, with minds and morals unclouded by hate, with bellies fat with prosperity.

And here you are. And here you are, with a mind so atrophied you can't form a coherent thought, but you bitterly ape a dead man's hate to make yourself feel better about how your aspirations go another year, uncompleted and your dreams grow dimmer. Grandpa paid a dear price for the life you wasted.

From the Belgae?

lol no one's reading all that you autist

That was uncalled for.

Thanks for the copypasta.

Hey, the Gauls had sacked Rome before.

saved, thanks for the bait user

Yeah, sub-alpine Guals. Raiding the Belgae for that is like burning down South Korea because Japan raided you once.

A true roman post for true romans

Around 62 BC, when a Roman client state, the Arverni, conspired with the Sequani and the Suebi nations east of the Rhine, to attack the Aedui, a strong Roman ally, Rome turned a blind eye. The Sequani and Arverni sought Ariovistus’ aid and defeated the Aedui in 63 BC at the Battle of Magetobriga. The Sequani rewarded Ariovistus with land following his victory. Ariovistus settled the land with 120,000 of his people. When 24,000 Harudes joined his cause, Ariovistus demanded that the Sequani give him more land to accommodate the Harudes people.

This demand concerned Rome because if the Sequani conceded, Ariovistus would be in a position to take all of the Sequani land and attack the rest of Gaul. Fearing another mass migration akin to the devastating Cimbrian War, Rome, now keenly invested in the defense of Gaul, was irrevocably drawn into war.

This would be even more beautiful if the geopolitics surrounding WW2 and Afghanistan/Iraq2.0 were at all comparable.

tl;dr
ctrl f, "Nazi" knew it was in there.
Europeans fighting other Europeans, psssh. National Socialism is the confluence between extreme left and extreme right, and today we only see the two getting more and more extreme. The future is so Nazi you don't need a shower to see it.

This is true. They fought until they removed barbarians from their borders, makes sense to me. Rome fell when it failed to remove subhuman Germanic hordes from the borderlands.

Sod off, ginger knob

Let's kill the Belgea because these tribes 300 miles south of em are fucking around!

Rome had been settling barbarians within their land since Augustus so please try again.

Belgae were conspiring and arming themselves in response to Caesar fucking up other tribes.

Some of best troops Rome had were "subhuman germanics"

They only chimped out when Rome failed to pay them for their service and murdered their families. Then when Alaric came to the table to try and cut the shit, Honorius went full retard.

user, I'm going to need you to delete your post and hand over all that quality Canadian education you've received. Your grandfather got by without it, and you're just wasting it on shit posting.

This, Romaboos pretend like Rome was fending off the barbarians at the gates. In reality, the Romans were trying to manipulate the Germanics into being de facto slaves and got BTFO.

this is not the proper time for that copypasta

Germanics of Rome were literally the same as British Pakis, considered a "martial race" by the Brits and constituting a good chunk of the imperial troops. And now Pakis are roaming the streets of Britain raping British women much like the Germanics did in Rome.

>everyone but romans are barbarians
>so barbarians are always on your borders
>so therefore you must expand (defensively) across the entire world

Reddit: the post

I think you mistake Sikhs and Pakhis when talking about the martial race

Sikhs and Pakis (Pashtuns, Baloch etc) were both considered martial.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martial_race

Why did the jews at HBO cancel the show?

There were several martial races, with Muslim Punjabis making up more than a third of the British Indian Army (the Hindus making up a similar percentage, and the rest being Sikhs).

But that user is still a fag.

ETERNAL FUCKING LATIN

too expensive

Because they gutted the budget to make room for Game of Thrones

That is wrong I don't know why so many people believe it, Rome was shit canned years before GoT entered pre pre pre production even as a concept.

After Mark Anthony died there were no worthful characters left.

That's wrong. GOT went into production around the same time that Rome was cancelled, set up with most of Rome's actors as well as its production crew. Both James Purefoy and Kevin McKidd refused to jump shit, honestly believing that Rome was cancelled to set up Game of Thrones‘ success.

I'll admit that Rome was basically a rougher, less polished GoT that didn't quite resonate with people, but there wasn't a lapse of years, it was an immediate flip in production starting on one as soon as the other got canned.

Yet another reason to hate GoT.

>Piss Rome off so badly they crush your army, and obliterate Corinth
>They're still pissed so they split up land into Epirus and Achaea

It was funded half by HBO and half by BBC. There was a big set fire that wrecked their major set piece and it was massively expensive to fix.

BBC backed out and HBO had to fund the whole show so they decided to pull the plug and gut the show down to only a second season.

Legions weren't stationed at Hadrian's Wall. It was manned by foreign auxiliary troops. Legionaries were based in Chester, York, Lincoln and Caerleon.

it's three paragraphs brainlet. i read it in less time than it took to type this post mocking you

Fucking eternal city states. It's the death of a kingdom everytime it helps city states.

they should seriously try to bring the show back. i mean all the actors are in GOT right now anyway, they could just teak the set slightly to make it look roman. obviously the story couldnt go forward, but maybe they could focus on stuff that happened in between the seasons or random side quests titus polo and verinius get up to. or just focus on augustus being a fucking badass. or just do a story on late antiquity rome, Constantine was cool af, theres so many cooler stories in the late empire . whatever

You do. Except you're one of the slaves, and you're also getting looted and pillaged

In a perfect world that would be fucking awesome if they continued Rome with, say, a new plot line covering the degeneracy of Tiberius's court and the harrowing madness of Caligula, who was basically a RL King Joffrey.

but in the one we live in we'll probably have to make due with magic, whitewalkers, and the dragon-queen of the SJWs for the foreseeable future.

>unapologetic
Except it wasn't.

Romans justified Rome's expansionism with history's telos of the world being ruled by Rome.

Yea i'm sure he just wanted to end racism.

We live under a dictatorship lead by Technology and the Economy. Our lives are shaped by these two.

>Industrialization replaces slavery
>Capitalism replaces looting and pillage
>Globalism replaces expansionism

I hate to sound predictable but I'd personally really like to see Gladiator remade as a historically accurate telling of Commodus rather than Ridley Scott's imaginary story about a general who "restores the Republic".

The idea would be too approach it like a horror movie instead of classic swords-n-sandals. Showcase the true horror of the Roman arena at its peak: thousands of animals and people being slaughtered for mindless spectacle. Showcase the banal creativity that went into ending the lives of criminals (men often not even given a trial). Showcase the Romans finding it utterly hilarious when a foreign dignitary attends the game and gets sick and loses his lunch because of how unbelievably horrible the games were to basically anyone who wasn't already jaded and conditioned to it.

Show Commodus for who he actually was: a showman more interested in lavish spectacle than actually ruling his empire, who could shoot the head off an ostrich and sometimes fought in the arena buck naked just to be like his hero Hercules, much to the chagrin of basically any semi-literate person who thought that his displays were tawdry and tacky as fuck. Of course every match he fights is totally rigged and the gladiators are given wooden swords while he kills them at his leisure, obsessed with living out his dream of being a warrior-hero. Let the height of this movie be when Commodus has the Praetorians round up all the cripples and strap them into a large person-shaped device so that looks like a giant, but is actually made of a bunch of helpless people tied together, allowing Commodus to club them to death one by one and then proclaim that he killed the mighty giant, cementing how out of touch he had become after wallowing in all the death and mayhem.

The movie ends with a whimper: Commodus is drown in his bathtub by one of his wrestling coaches and a Christian willingly walks to this horrible end rather than convert, stirring the emotions of everyone who knows her

FUND IT

>a Christian willingly walks to this horrible end rather than convert, stirring the emotions of everyone who knows her
Who was that? I'm always having trouble remembering Christian martyrs.

You can join the Islamic State right now

Good entertainment needs to be carried by it's characters user, you cant -just- have a long display of violence we're supposed to feel repulsed by with no one but a serial killer villain to take us through it.

I think a saga that includes the Jugurthine war, the Cimbrian war, the social war and finally the first civil war and cataline conspiracy and directly leads to the events of the first Rome series would be ideal, you have the start of the "degeneracy" in Rome's state apparatus, as Jugurth corrupts it with his wealth and subverts Rome's power over it's own diplomats and allies, the Cimbrian migration revealing Rome's chronic problem of turning a defensive military action into a genocide for the sake of triumphs and political power and having it blow in their face, it had Marius and Sulla utterly butt fuck whatever remained of the institutional integrity of Rome, it leading to the rest of Italy turning against Rome from the sheer shameless greed and arrogance, the east being threatened and finally a climatic showdown between the two, and then the Cataline conspiracy sets up the stage for the Trimvirate and the final downfall of the Republic.

This would be, of course, best presented after the Punic and Macedonian wars leave the citizens of Rome split between those who profited from it and those who lost it all.

Addinto to this, you can tease Spartacus' revolt and Crassus and Pompey's feud by showing him befriending some enslaved Cimbri

Rome's history is chockful of overlapping, intertwined events leading up to one another. It's fucking top tier edutainment material.

You can always leave Islam and move to a Western country Ahmed.

never 4get

>expansionism, slavery, looting and pillage
Pretty much describes modern US

If you live in almost any western country, you do, it just isn't as visible to you.

Define "west" in this case at that's a contentious claim depending on how you do.

So this is the return of Rome posting
should have used this

Yes but they were being killed so they couldn't be killed by others, which is fair, anyway why does it matter ti was TRVE ROMANS killing barbarians

so was Lucius vorenus supposed to be descended from actual celts or Gauls lying about having Latin ancestry or what?

I feel like a lot of people mistake historical significance with actual value. Romans did do a lot of good, but they did a lot of bad too and empire in general is pretty horrible.

Proportional to global population, that is far worse than any contemporary genocide.

>mccullough_kekking.jpg
I heartily approve.

maybe read the actual Gallic accounts

I doubt that the bank would give me a 100 million dollar loan necessary to fund a project of this magnitude. If your credit is that good lets corroborate

I forget, exactly, but the idea would be that we would want historical plausibility. That we can write about events that may have happened elsewhere in the primary sources and could have plausibly happened in the time frame of the movie without contradicting anything. For example Seneca writes about a gladiator who chokes himself to death with a lavatory sponge, and another who kills himself by sticking his head between the spokes of the carriage taking him to the arena so that it snaps his neck. These are the kind of small things we could include in the movie which would add flavor without necessarily being historically inaccurate

>Good entertainment needs to be carried by it's characters user,
The premise would be if the movie Saw had a baby with the movie Quo Vadis. Quo Vadis was a lofty, theme driven story, Saw was visual horror, and that's what this would be a mix of. Thematic horror would be in something like untried "criminals" rent by lions or a deranged killer as society's heroic ideal or a sweet, innocent, teenager being raped to death by animals. To the Romans she's just another future-corpse bleeding out on the rape box after being force-fucked by a jack ass, something they've seen a thousand times. To the audience and the people who mourn her, she becomes a symbol of the thing that society can never completely take from a person, no matter how badly they're tormented

We could easily have characters bearing witness to events described in the primary sources with the historical characters acting as a foil. I'm thinking something along the lines of a common shlub who works as a low ranking worker in the arena and is constantly shit upon until he meets the qt3.14 of his dreams (the Christian who later willingly walks to her death in the name of her faith)

>tfw your civilization carries on the true Roman lineage

...

>extermination camps
>>>

I ask myself that every day.

I dont think a whole show based around only the horrors of the arena would be too entertaining, or even topically representative. You had mostly non-lethal fights, plays, circus acts, literal rodeo clowns and races, the arena was more than a slaughterhouse, it is just that violence and death were so normalized to Romans that they saw a silly comedy as entertainment just like a lethal sword duel or an animal goring someone. It dehumanizes this audience too far and simultaneously removes the shocking aspect of the Roman bread and circus when it's not just another part of life. The common Roman would go see blood and fucked up shit and then relax at the baths and concern himself with menial shit, not too far from how you can tab back and forth between liveleak, fifty hentais and youtube videos of pets. It was a different society but the people were just like you or i and yet they were okay with a lot of things we cant imagine now purely because of their cultural background, that's the point you need to drive home.

This.
All other posters are butthurt barbarians

10/10 post. Gallic Wars were defensive.

now that shit against the Parthians, true Romans feel shame.

>Flavius Stilicho

10/10...fund it

What you have to remember is that the games were different things at different times, what they were in Augustus's day was very different from what they were at their zenith in Commodus's day.

I repeat, thousands upon thousands of animals and humans slaughtered almost daily at their height. People rounded up for no reason other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Most of the wholesome entertainment would be over by mid morning. They were pre-day distractions meant to entertain the women and children. By lunchtime the women and children would leave in time for the daily executions, where the Romans came up with a never ending supply of ways to creatively kill a man in the most humiliating and degrading ways possible. The afternoons would consist of beast-fights (think Elephant vs rhino or lion vs tiger), hunts, scripted events (such as, say, an army of bestiarii vs an army of elephants, or a naval battle) with the main event being the 1-on-1 gladiator duels. The gladiators were prized investments and only about 1/3rd of the fights were lethal, but a games organizer who spared the lives of too many gladiators was seen as stingy. Yes, they had umpires and very strict rules regarding first-blood and they were treated like celebrities, but for the vastly larger number of lowlier dregs who didn't get to bang bored housewives, the coliseum was a death factory.

The horror would not necessarily be in the blood and guts, but how normalized it had become to the Romans who demanded a near daily amount of it.

> It was a different society but the people were just like you or i
That would exactly be the point. It may have been a "different society" with different customs and expectations but at the end of the day they would have been the same people as us, ones possessed by delusions of hero-worship but deep down knew what they were doing was depravity, hence the need for a Christian martyr in the story to remind people how we became who we are today.
