I think there's a huge difference between the kind of Old Southern plantation owner or Confederate general accent, and the Appalachian/Bayou countryside accent. The former got lost as all the places that produced educated southerners got consistently improving education over the decades, but the latter stayed the same because nothing really improved for them.
