It was actually pretty similar to the modern Middle East where there were two large major powers fueling ethno-religious proxy wars, with major religious strife and rioting as state sponsored religions corrode their rapidly declining religious minorities and heretics due to the political rise of organized priesthoods shutting down all syncretic and heterodox beliefs of centuries past.
