Numerous regional flags take from past entities. New England's came from the English Red Ensign and the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

The St Andrew's Cross came from the Scots Irish that made up most of the Southern American settlers, and it's present on not just the Dixie flag, but on the state flags of Alabama and Florida for example.
