appreciating irony has nothing to do with being genuine and authentic. You can be totally fake and artificial and too stupid to appreciate irony, you can be an honest straight shooter who has mastered the art of expressing himself using language that normally signifies the opposite for humorous or emphatic effect. Of course like any rhetorical flourish it only has value when it has the right scarcity, so people who overuse it give the technique a bad name, but the real assholes picking on the honest ones are fake people, not ironic people.
You can be an honest or fake person who recognizes that the true irony of Alanis Morissette's Ironic is that none of the things that she describes in the song is actually irony.
