My personal experience is that there is a god and christianity got changed, being originally a gnostic belief but with devil instead of demiurge, the people of the world belong to hell so they will try anything for you to disbelieve or follow the wrong religion or follow the religion wrongly.

I think that people have what I call "dispositions" based on their life experiences, that lead them to agree with and adopt beliefs that fit their dispositions the most.
So if someone has a hateful and argumentative and vindictive disposition, then they are more likely to adopt a belief which aligns with that disposition.
It could be religious or nonreligious, either one will simply be a flavor of the same root disposition.

I don't really know if it can work the other way around, if your belief can influence your disposition.
