Austrian ultimatum

Why is the Austrian ultimatum to Serbia widely considered as very unreasonable? After the assassination of your heir and involvement of the Serbian government, it would be fair to ask for Austrian delegates playing a role in the investigation, would it not? Yet it was the only demand of the ultimatum which Serbia was not willing to comply with. It seems to me that Austria was in a good position to ask such a demand a couple of weeks after the shooting with the investigation supposedly going nowhere. Pasic was aware of the terrorist act before it occurred, but made only a halfhearted attempt at preventing it.

You can hardly expect AH to allow heavy subversion and undermining from Serbia. Nicholas as well told the Serbs to accede to the ultimatum; neither was there support from France. Still Serbia refused.

So why then did Serbia refuse to agree with all points? And more importantly, why is the ultimatum viewed as harsh and unlikely, even impossibly, to be accepted?

Because Serbia wanted war because they expected Russia to steamroll Austria.

Austria asked Serbia to grant the Austrian military full power in Serbia because a lone crazy Bosnian individual had killed some random Austrian noble

Imagine if after a crazy American redneck had killed a Russian official visiting America, Russia asked for the US to grant full power to the Russian military in their country

>Austria asked Serbia to grant the Austrian military full power in Serbia
What? They asked no such thing.

They asked for AH delegates to participate in the criminal investigation.
>because a lone crazy Bosnian individual had killed some random Austrian noble
He wasnt lonly, it was part of an elaborate plot with ties to the Serbian government
>Imagine if after a crazy American redneck had killed a Russian official visiting America, Russia asked for the US to grant full power to the Russian military in their country
If that redneck had ties to Trump (to make the comparison fair), it would indeed be reasonable to request direct involvement in the investigation.

>Random Austrian Noble

More like the heir of one of the world's premier Great Powers.

Imagine if Mike Pence was assassinated by a Mexican National while visiting Santa Fe.

Germany "pushed" AH in war;AH would have attacked Serbia even if they allowed everything in ultimatum, because Wilchelm told to AH emperor that unless AH attacks Serbia,Germany will attack AH

Because no nation is ever going to allow foreign police to operate in your nation like they where your police

>inb4 furshit deviantart posting

>involvement of the Serbian government
no. your argument would make sense if this were true but it's 100.00000000000% false. the serbian government hated the black hand and shared intel on them freely with vienna.

Serbia accepted the ultimatum in all points except for allowing the Austrian police to act Serbia which they asked be given to an international court.

The response was more than fair and Austria declared war anyway. They lost the moral high ground after that.

>random Austrian noble
>random Austrian noble
>random Austrian noble
wew

I have never heard of this. Where is this claim from?
Ye, the problem was that the Serbian messenger to Vienna was a nationalist. If I remember correctly teh warnings from Serbia were so vague that they were useless to AH.
Serbia was hardly in a position to make demands.

Happens all the time for serious international crime.

Russian investigators sent to Turkey after ambassador got assassinated.

British investigators sent to Tunisia after beach murders.

>Serbia was hardly in a position to make demands
>Serbia refuses the ultimatum
>Serbia still exists today
>Austro-Hungary doesn't

Seems like they were in a pretty good position

it was not black hand! it was mlada bosna! get your shit together!

The Serbs couldn't let the Austrians in on the investigation. The Black Hand was run by the Serbian Military Intelligence chief.
The Serbian nationalists are more to blame for this than the Austrians.

>hurr durr

Nice one.

It was less that and more that the Serbs stonewalled the initial investigation and went "lol I dunno" because the Black Hand deep state permeated so much of the military and government (snd Serbian society in general) that they knew they would be fucked. This followed on the heels of other assassination attempts by irredentist networks directed towards Austria as well.

>serbia refuses the ultimatum

Honestly this triggers me every time. They ACCEPTED the ultimatum.

Read the original telegram. They agreed to everything.

In the telegram they admitted that there were Serbian officers involved in anti-austro-hungarian activities and that they would be removed from their positions and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Dimitrijevic and the other officers in the Black Hand were executed by firing squad in 1916.

AH's chimpout on Serbia had nothing to do with terrorism or morality. They wanted to expand their empire and put down uppity slavs.

>Bosnian nationalist murders the guy that would've inherited the throne in less than three years, and that looked the most kindly toward liberal ideals and federalism in the whole Austrian government
What did he mean by this?

> They agreed to everything.
Except for point 6:
"As far as the cooperation in this investigation of specially delegated officials of the I. and R. Government is concerned, this cannot be accepted, as this is a violation of the constitution and of criminal procedure."

Actually there were six assassins present, who received help from at least a dozen Servian Government officials. The hand guns and hand grenades they were used were the property of the Kingdom of Servia, traced by their serial numbers from the manufacturer to the assassins.
