Well first of all, he's not a "philosopher."
And the reason he matters is not because of his specific ideas (everything is about poop and fucking your mom), but more the general ideas, that the human mind can be studied the way you would study any natural phenomenon, as a product of cause and effect, and that the knowledge gained in such study can be used to treat ailments of the mind. The fact that those statements seem trivially obvious today just underscores how revolutionary they were then.
