From my admittedly rather shallow understanding of art history it all has to do with movement towards deconstructing norms. Most artists who experimented in the weird shit were perfectly capable of replicating some of the styles of great older masterpieces but the result was that they could not exceed them. It seems the pinnacle of realism had been achieved to some degree so there was a movement away in the form of abstraction. The result has been that anyone who puts shot on paper, canvas, or sculpture can claim they're an artist because muh feelings without actually understanding that the initial movement towards deconstruction had literally nothing to do with egalitarianism and was instead a way for those who had mastered their craft to leave their own Mark on history that was not merely an emulation of older works.

Some is, some isn't. A lot of artists believe non-traditional and sometimes shocking means should be used to convey an emotional or political message.
