If you're talking about living standards, the whole world was like this, then after industrial revelution and french revolution it started getting better in europe, reaching a good standard when world wars started. including japan and new world(including south america). Somehow japan kept getting better but south america deteiorated, and then other eastern and south asian nations started getting better after getting independence.
Answering your subject question, india has produced tremendous amount of culture and influenced south east asia and east asia immensely, gave middle east their math when they started their invasions, and then even somewhat the west when independence movement was at its height, its effects could be seen as emergence of hippie culture.

And after indepence it was very difficult for india since its vast wealth was almost completely depleted and it also had to get new people get accostomed to new administration and system which was designed originally to enslave the people.
