A strange obsession with Medieval Europe, especially the Byzantines and 1453. Lots of young guys adore the Medieval period as some sort of idyllic, pre-racial, pure version of Christian Europe.

Now, few things. One, the existence of a distinct European culture that has persisted over centuries is something that I would call into question. A modern day Turk is more similar to me in every way than a guy from Constantinople five centuries ago, and I'm from Serbia.

Two, are they your ancestors? You are Greek? If so, then maybe this can be filed under benign nationalism. Even then, there has been immense cultural change. You, too, would probably be more culturally similar to a 21st century Turk than to a 15th century Byzantine.

Three, I simply don't think there are any modern day parallels. The barbarians are not at the gates. The migrant crisis is not an existential threat to Europe.
