The Brits knew that a mass exodus would be disastrous so they did it over time. France did not have to leave Algeria in 2 years - the nationalists there had not won a military victory if Degaul had a heart for the French there it would have been all to easy to increase the military presence and have an orderly hand over instead of the chaotic and brutal mess caused by his literal duplicity.
