It was about a year ago, and I remember it only hazily, but I remember reading a fragment of a historical paper that suggested the fall of Rome was a good thing with regards to technological / economic development.

And not just in a "Chaos is a ladder" sort of way, but in the sense that the latifunda slave-driven system of large landowners actively depressed the impulse towards agrarian development or innovation.

I would appreciate any recommendations towards general histories in this vein. Every single book I've ever read on the Romans seems to always be "WE WUZ IMPERIALS N SHEET" pro-SPQR fanboyism. I would like to read something of the opposite perspective: that their empire was bad and they should feel bad.

>the opposite perspective: that their empire was bad and they should feel bad.

That is quite literally been the scholarly mainstream since the 1970s. Much focus has been made on the institution of slavery and the horrifying blood lust of the Roman people that goes far beyond even their contemporaries.

Rome certainly was a stagnant beast technologically speaking, but its demise did lead to several centuries of reverses.

What the fuck is happening in France and Africa

being taken by germanics, dont you know basic roman history breh

The Gallic bit was the part of France held by the Roman master of soldiers Aegidius and his son Syagrius, even after the rest of Gaul broke away under independent polities controlled by Germanic tribes like the Visigoths (south-west), Burgundians (SE) and Franks (NE), or had broken away independently (Armorica in the NW or Vasconia in the SW).

Most of Africa had been seized by the Vandals or broken away to become independent Romano-Moorish kingdoms, aside from the part of Tingitania near Tingis and Sala which was held by loyal Roman governors.

>WE COULD HAVE HAD IT ALL
>ROLLING IN THE DEEP

I believe they found some skeletons that showed signs better nutrition immediately after the fall of rome.

My thoughts about were: after rome fell, the weighty, corrupt beurocracy vanished over night, allowing farmers to keep more of their crop since they didnt have to pay taxes. And at this point all of the infrastructure was still around, and more importantly people still KNEW the things that the romans knew. But as decades passed knowledge was lost and aqueducts crumbled and eventually things got much worse.

Your post is somewhat accurate, yes. Roman taxes were crushing by the standards of a subsistence food-production ancient state. It is unlikely many people missed it (if they even noticed it had gone).

THE DAY I TRIED TO LIVE
I STOLE A THOUSAND BEGGARS' CHANGE
AND GAVE IT TO THE RICH

But it didn't vanish over night, the Roman government slowly disappeared rather than straight up vanishing in a day. Many romans still lived under roman law despite the king being a germanic, and the ostrogoths under Odoacer were still officially clients of julius nepos and then the eastern emperor

NOTHING WRONG WITH ME

"Why Nations Fail" has a segment on Rome I believe, and discusses the phenomenon you're describing at length.

>their empire was bad and they should feel bad
I don't know if this is really the case. I think it would be more accurate to say that the success of Empire destroyed the values that made it possible in the first place.

I shaved my ass today
and then I picked my heels

Fall of the Roman Empire by Peter Heather goes into this.

The Roman Empire was essentially a one-party state whose exsistance actively depressed living conditions for a huge slice of the population. You can actually see evidence of the discontent, specifically in barbarian invasions of the Balkans. The archaeological evidence shows that farmers joined in the pillaging, and actively targeted the rich. Not a united politic, rather a really repressed citizenry who sided with the invader over there own rulers.
