I, along with a couple of friends, am planning to buy acreage in Maine and then create a decent sized commune, type society of around 50 people. We're currently working out the governance of said community and how we will go about setting it up. There's just one dilemma. We can't come up with a name. We want something historically relevant, while simultaneously being capable of rolling off the tongue. We originally settled on New Delphi on account of the ancient greek city state, but have since decided that it sounded odd when spoken. With all that being said I would be much obliged if we could brainstorm names for this future community. If you guys so choose I would also be completely open to expanding the conversation to the broader topic of the historical significance that is tied with communes and how they operate as a whole.

I've always dreamed of starting a commune.
I think the trick is (to societies in general), various levels of esoteric ritual. An esoterokracy, if you will. New recruits go through basic songs, prayers, dances, etc. then after a year or so, you start them on the drugs and orgies, until they're completely spiritually integrated into your society.
Although I feel it would make more sense as a secret society. Move to some small, geographically isolated town, then slowly integrate into the local politic until you literally run the place.
As for names, what kind of society are you aiming for exactly?

Churches do conduct welfare programs. Alot of them involve having an event at a business and encouraging people to show up and spend money, part of which goes to the church. They do in fact support business and encourage business growth because that is good for the people and the community.
And yes, if it was required Churches would arm and supply military forces if it was required for mutual defense of the people. Religious organizations of all stripes have done this in history.
Churches make much more sense for supplying local needs like poverty and social work, freeing up more national resources for public interest growth and development, defense, infrastructure, science and research,and yes corporate safety net. Let the local churches handle the bastard druggies and the whores mothers that cant stop cranking them out.
