Pinochet

Give is to me straight Veeky Forums

Was he actually a good leader, or is it just a /pol/ meme?

Just a /pol/ meme

I have no idea why /pol/ worships this guy. He was a pro-free trade neoliberal economically and would have a protectionist populist like Trump tossed out of a helicopter.

/pol/ likes right wing authoritarians.

unsurprisingly, /pol/ isn't very smart

Not the best leader, but not the worst.

He usurped what would have become a totalitarian communist regime.

Pinochet was a gray area.

He was good because he saved Venezuela from Allende. For all the memeing about America supporting a coup to overthrow the legitimate government, it was actually as legal and popular as it could get in Chile. The Chilean congress asked Pinochet to step in as Allende ruined the economy and moved towards an authoritarian state.

The problem came when Pinochet clung to power and began persecuting those on the Left. Apart from the rampant human rights abuses, Pinochet's regime also was responsible for many of the social issues in Chile today, ranging from the high degree of income inequality (though hardly something unusual for South America) to corruption and the politicization of the military. That last point in particular is a big one - military service and support for the military is a decidedly right-wing thing in Chile.

Even in Chile, he's not universally reviled like many people would expect, and that's exactly because he saved the country from Allende.

you wont find ideological consistency regarding economics on /pol/
they follow the axiom higher proportions of white people yield better outcomes across the board
also this

t pol

>Chilenos
>white

>Even in Chile, he's not universally reviled like many people would expect

I'd say he is almost universally despised

I'm just regurgitating what I was told when I was in Iquique. I'm sure he's not seen as any kind of saint, but the general feel I got from talking to people was that it was less of a
>he's a hitler or stalin
and more of a
>he's a Franco-lite

He is shit-tier.

I don't really know anyone who supports Pinochet ala "he did nothing wrong", most people who aren't teenager Facebook commie memers just think that Allende had to go for one way or another. Allende really fucked the country, Chile has never been a wealthy country but we really never saw periods of literal starvation. What came later really sucked, but at least he left the power somewhat pacifically.

The Chilean economic crisis came from the Nixon administration trying to sabotage and foment unrest in the country. Allende was the true patriot; Pinochet was a patsy for the (((Chicago boys))).

He did some good thingstuff economically, if you agree with those sort of policies. He was however an authoritarian and did use violence to keep power.

Videla was much better at throwing people from helicopters. Plus he didn't dress like a living meme

The best South American dictator. Which means he was a shit leader but really it's not like South America has ever produced any winners.

Why do people accuse Allende of moving towards dictatorship when they guy refused demands from his supporters to throw them gunz
he could have very easily turned the events from what would have been a coup to a civil war, and was given plenty of opportunity to do so.

/pol/ cares about muh social issues not about economics or anything else that requires reading. as long as you burn the fags and gas the trannies you can be a leninist and they'll worship you

He killed commies and other assorted leftist shits

Also #swag as fuck
Legend in my book

He also basically destroyed his country. But that's okay because muh ebin helicopter rides xD.

Oh well

Kill yourself.

he was an incredibly flawed leader, but he saved his country from allende.

>destroyed his country
He left a legacy that saw Chile become one of the most prosperous countries in the region. Chile would likely be in a worse state than even Venezuela is today if Allende had stayed in Power.

When will people learn that the only good Communist is a dead one?

He was replying to a picture of Videla

Eat shit, Pinko

Peron>Pinochet

capitalism is just as evil as communism

the third way is the only way

The only fucking thing Peron knew how to do was sucking Mussolini's dead dick.

Just another banana republic dictator.
Well the upper class certainly is. Also those Prussian uniforms look so cool.

Shit because we never got to see Cybersyn in real action.

>Look, Ma, I'm helping!

>/pol/ is one person
Only libertarians and ancaps like Pinochet. You're one of these idiots that think all of /pol/ is sucking Trump's cock yet if you go there now you'll find a lot of them calling Trump a neocon.

This. The best part of this whole thing was seeing right wingers then and today claiming Allende was a tyrant doing unconsitutional things, yet their response was to implement a foreigner backed dictatorship

>Have your cabinet kicked out for being disgustingly corrupt and stupid
>Appoint them to different seats instead
>Fuck over private property, steal land, industry and infrastructure from former skilled Chilean owners to give it to the mobs who let it all rot and decay and ended up selling it to foreigners, plunging every non-urban chilean into poverty and irrelevance
>Openly allowing commie guerrillas and subversion to persecute, pillage and burn anyone who wasn't in on the revolution

no, but his economic reforms helped set the path for good growth further down the line

of course needs a lot of context of allende, other south american countries, american 'intervention' etc

If any of you fuckers new SA you wouldn't be speaking this crap, Pinochet is the reason Chile is not a shit hole like the rest of SA.
That's not true at all, stop saying things that you don't know shit about fuck face. A friend of mine is studying pedagogy in Santiago and most people have good things to say about Pinochet.

Considering that the free market reforms came in 1975 and GDP had increased by 50% by 1990, I'd say it was a miracle.

Meanwhile GDP barely rose in the rest of Latin America between '75 and '90.

Sounds pretty good to me.

>muh GDP
>being this economically illiterate

Is higher GDP not a indicator of economic success?

Does /pol/ even know that he wanted to give sea to Bolivia?

It could've been a lot worse

>implying gassing fags and trannies is a bad thing
Senpai, that means we can better society. Its not like Trannies do us any good only just drain the healthcare system with their dysfuctional minds and regressive behavior

>not knowing Pinochet was also protecting Chile from years of social regression

He offered a 4km strip in the border with Peru which would have cockblocked Peru from ever hopping to get Arica back, so they turned it down.

>Implying Pinochet was any better

All dictatorships destroyed their own country

...

Forgot my image. This is my nigga Omar. He disagrees with your sentiment.

Chilean here, I like him desu but only somewhat ironically, he wasn't a good president but he was better than all the other? Is that understandable?

Picture_of_a_man_forcing_a_reluctant_dog_to_eat_medicine.jpg

So "he was shit, but Allende would have been worse?"

Stalin isn't universally reviled in Russia. He "saved the country from the Germans".

It's not a good metric.

More like he was mediocre and everyone else is shit.

Im chilean you fucking retard

He did what was necessary at the time in order to save his country from becoming another Cuba. He is the definition of a good leader.

>as legal and popular as it could get
What part of "military coups are by definition illegal" don't you understand?

Shhh...

*revisionism intensifies*

which is why I said as legal as it could get. The Chilean legislature and supreme court requested Pinochet to oust him, and they had exhausted all their legal means to oppose him up to that.

It wasn't just Pinochet deciding some day that he wanted to become president. The legitimate elected government requested he step up.

Lower class?
Only that demo seems to be want socialism.

Thatcher's pet. Another so-so Latin strongman whose only credentials was 'kills commies' and remained propped up by the NATO cabal because of that and nothing to do with his ability to actually lead a country.

what does that have to do with your opinion on pinocho

You don't have to be 'lower class' to not want to be slaves to the IMF and USA, which is what Pinochet made us. I'm guessing you're the son of some rich asshole.

>All dictatorships destroyed their own country

baka

>as long as you burn the fags and gas the trannies you can be a leninist and they'll worship you
This
>Be Flip.
>Have a murderer for a president.
>/pol/ = LMAO YOU'RE A LIBKEK FOR CARING ABOUT YOUR LEADERS OBEYING DUE PROCESS AND HUMAN RIGHTS.
>Meanwhile, Duterte is friends with the lefties, gave them shitloads of cabinet posts, paid "revolutionary tax" to communist rebels so they don't start shit in the city he was mayor of, is a Chinese dicklicker.
>Enemies with the Catholic Church.
>Yeah, I'm the libcuck here.

Dictators wreck their countries because they wreck institutions and tolerant political culture.

Sulla did some good things on the object level but set the norm of military domination, wrecked the senate as respected institution, and completely failed to effect the tribunes. The republic would have lasted longer without him.

t. acemoglu

Meh.

Take away all that CIA money and ex-Nazi secret police and let's see how fucking tough he was.

I mean what's the anti-institution argument? These things are important.

/pol/ meme and also a chilean right wing totem, just like Allende with the left. They will never left the collective memory given that Chile is a really divided country in that regard.
The coup was not justfied at all, unless you're an american, in that case you should feel glad that your empire got another not-colony.
>The Chilean congress
More like the CIA and Nixon.
>liking something "ironically"
>picture of a mall
>president
You should pay more attention in english and history class, kid.

Pinochet was a president you stupid communist, go back to red.dit or kys.

wow you sure convinced me with those hot opinions
Go back to your praying, old lady.
