I can't stand the way that Anne Frank's story is taught in schools. In my school district it's the way that they teach the Holocaust as a whole (through her diary + supplemental materials) and the suggested lesson plans we received were so sanitized and saccharine that I just couldn't bring myself to use them.

I ended up assigning this essay along with the diary, and showed the second half of Anne Frank: the Whole Story which covers her life and death in the camps. All the history classes watch the 1959 film together or otherwise I wouldn't have included it. Comparing the final shot of Anne in both films--the wistful, overly make-upped Millie Perkins looking dramatically out the window versus a sick Anne cradling her dead sister's body and staring up in bewildered horror is a great metaphor for how Anne's story has been taught versus the starker reality.
